I just put on a 5" stainless silverline exhaust this weekend. I added a the 4" elbow in the process. It make a big difference in sound from stock. Nice and deep. I haven't towed with it yet so I don't know about drone. I have noticed the egt's cooling down much faster than before. At least 50* at idle. I need to get a few clamps on it before I take it on the highway to get an idea of any egt differences.
If you are going to upgrade, I wouldn't keep the old exhaust elbow.

I have run 4" after market and 5" single exhaust. I can tell you the 5" exhaust moves the drone up to a higher rpm. The 5" has a deeper tone to it and with the right muffler it can be quiet. If you're making over 600 hp you may see lower egts and a bit more low end torque with 5". Stacks seem to make the most differance.

The '03-'04 "305" engines have a 4" to 3.5" turbo manifold (elbow) and the '04.5 and newer "325" engines have a 4" to 4" elbow. When doing a new exhaust system, a lot of guys are going to the newer larger elbow for better EGTs and more overall flow. They are not expensive either. Mine was $96 brand new from Dodge with the clamp. You can find them used for cheaper, but you usually end up having to spend time getting it off the other truck. Time is money.

Just this weekend put the MBRP 5" on my stock truck. It sounds great. Not to loud at highway speed (from in the cab) but pretty rugged sounding under load. The biggest reason I went with the 5" was so I wouldnt have to change it later when the other inevitable upgrades come. As far as losing low end power its not enough to notice.

I ran 4" for 4 yrs before a 5". If there is any truth to this argument.... it's inconsequencial and not worth considering on our CTD's. JMO.

so you are saying it helped your truck out or hurt it?

I was trying to say that a 5" won't hurt performance on your truck. I don't see much help either.
Maybe 50* lower EGT's when I was a single turbo and over fueled.
Only reason for a 5" exhaust, IMO, is better sounding truck.
