NITRO - good work in progress...I am impatiently waiting since I do not have 5 bills to drop on another exhaust. The elbow and DP are what I am interested in...keep us posted. THANKS! - JKE

yea I'm watching this too nitro and others. I don't suppose there is any concerns about 1000 degree EGT on a stainless elbow instead of cast? $190 is pretty steep for a downpipe. problem is that there are no true 4" downpipes that fit a 4" cast elbow. And the Banks makes a more gentle curve anyway I think.
on mufflers. Sounds like we have three choices: donadlson, flopro, and Nelson.
I'm starting to like the sounds of avoiding an expensive full replacement. keep up the good work!
donaldson and Nelson are 51". how long is the flopro?
somebody needs to custom fab a 4" downpipe and go get a 4" cast elbow from an 04.5 directly from Holset...

Hey Doug,
From what I could see, they have two options in length for a 4" in 4" out center to cetner muffler. Option one is a 24" body, option 2 is a 30 inch body. I went with the 24" (I hope that wasn't a misstake). I got the info from this site..................

Prices include shipping (I ordered mine yesterday).

Banks Down Pipe

I was wondering if i got an aftermarket exhaust, would it be a true 4 inch down pipe, or a 3.5 inch that goes into a 4 inch pipe

something that has always gotten my curiosity is this: how does #14 (or is it #16) T409 behave over the long term in the presence of 1000 degree EGTs? seems like the cast elbow would have some advantage in that regard, yet I doubt that there have been any Banks DP failures. then again does anyone have 200,000 miles on a fuel enhanced 03 with a Banks DP?
and dodgedude -- the Banks would fit your truck but you would have to throw away your fancy full 4" cast elbow -- same as anyone else. Thats really the only solution guarenteed to bolt up to your turbo (without going custom). So you won't be eliminating a 3.5" necked down cast elbow -- just replacing cast iron with T409 stainless tubing.

I can't believe no one has sourced one from holset. dern thing is standard on the 600/325.
woa, dodgedude, what was I thinking! check out your dealer for a 04.5 downpipe. probably in the same price bracket as the Banks downpipe, and you get to keep your really cool cast elbow. In other words, what you have probably bolts right up to a 4" 04.5 exhaust pipe.
There is an argument saying the Banks pipe is slightly less restrictive than the cast elbow, but I'm not sure that applies in your case (yours is already full 4") and if it does, I'd suggest the beneift to be negligable. (Banks bend radius might be slightly larger)
hmm, so get yourself a stock 04.5 downpipe, a straight 4" piece and a new muff. I bet it would bolt up with a little garage creativity.
you might have to wait on the 04.5 downpipe though. odds are Chrysler isn't expecting to replace very many of those right now. It might not even be available yet.

BTW, while we're all pining after a full 4" cast elbow, those who tow need look no further than the new exhaust brakes for 04.5. For example, Pac and BD brakes replace the cast elbow. So an 04.5 brake and a stock 04.5 downpipe should bolt up nicely.

doug, thanx for the reply. do the 600`s have a stock 4 inch system? i`m asking because you suggest i get a stock DP from a 2004.5. my guess is that they are prolly the same as mine 4 inch DP that turns into a 3.5.
I will call the dealer and find out.
Car_nut57 , i realise the banks DP replaces the elbow, but in my opinion, i`m better off keeping my TRUE 4 inch cast elbow. I`m not an expert by ANY meens, but that thing is cast iron for a reason .it just seems that i should keep my 200 bucks , and look for a bolt up TRUE 4 inch DP
thx for the input guys

600/325s have the full 4" cast elbow AND they are indeed 4" turbo to tail. So yea, the 04.5 downpipe should fit your oddball 03 and perform just as well as the Banks elbow-eliminating downpipe. At the end of the 4" downpipe you'll have figure out how to bolt up other 4" components (extensions, muff, whatever).

dodgedude361,
Most all the aftermarket exhausts for the 2003-2004 are a 4" down pipe from the elbow on. Changing the elbow makes a very noticeable differnence. An example is Jeff in our shop drives a 2004 HO with automatic and he installed a Silverline single exhaust on his truck and ran it for awhile. Later the cast elbow was removed and we simply smoothed the inside surface with a flaper wheel. The change just by smoothing the inside surface was surprising to say the least. The reason this seems to make so much differnce is the the exhaust gases are swirling a lot as they leave the turbo and the rough surface of the elbow creates turbulence which is not optimum for flow. The Banks down pipe eliminate the labor of smoothing the factory elbow as well as keeping a constant diameter of 4".

on the smooth inner surface - very cool. Can you quantify the difference? what do you think the realizable benefit would be in actual driving situations and how is that benefit measured?
