2nd gen ex. manifold on CR
I've heard of people putting a 2nd generation exhaust manifold on their common rail to change the exhaust tone. I'm tired of the raspy sound and want it deeper like the ol' 24 valves. But, problem is, the companies I've talked to about this say that there is no way to change the exhaust tone on the common rail because of the injection cycles. Does anyone have any proof of this?

I don't think it would be all that much work to adapt everything to the new manifold but if it doesn't change anything there's no point in me even trying it.

I don't believe there's too much you can do about the sound of the CR. Changing the exhaust manifold wouldn't be worth the trouble just for the differance in the sound. The turbo is a bit easer to get at on the 2nd gen. Changing the cam may make more differance. I have heard CRs with aftermarket cams and 2nd gen manifolds and they still sound like a CR.

The sound is different but it does not sound like a 2nd gen at all. The only reason I did it on mine is because I had all the parts from my 2nd gen sitting in the garage. If you hear my 03 and my brother in laws 04 there is a definate difference but not extreme.

My turndown exhaust tip made mine sound alot more like a "big truck" would. After Idling through parking lots lots of guys ask me what all has been done to it, thinking its some built or transplanted engine.

The CR engine has quite abit more rail pressures than a 12v or 24v does, that changes the tone along with the cam profile, larger ports and a different turbo and computer programming. The CR was a change to support more power and be more reliable, its gonna sound different. I found that the stacks produce more of the smoother sound like a 24v, hardly any raspiness at all but it still doesn't sound like a 24v.
