this is RatherBeMuddin s truck

will they carry a 12000+ pd truck, the 285s on a stock rim, and how wide of spacer would be needed get rid of the rubbing

I think you could get away with a 1" spacer, however i'm not 100 percent sure anyone makes just a 1". As you can see in the pic 2" spacers are overkill for 285's. With no spacer at all, 50psi of air, and nothing in the bed I had dang near 3/8" between the tires at the bulge. With my loaded tool box and ATV (around 1k lbs. combined) I only had about 1/8", I added some big grade 8 washers between the wheels (1 per stud) which gave me a little more. Sometime in the future I will go with 35x12.50's and will need the spacers, but this set up works for me know. I doubt this would work for 12k lbs though... Luckily haven't been towing much over 5k lbs for awhile.

The MT/R's are holding up better than I thought they would. Right now they have around 65 percent tread left with a little over 35,000 miles on them. 90 percent has been interstate/city driving. I have been rotating them semi-faithfully (if there is such a thing) whenever I see the fronts starting to round I will put them in back. After several miles and a few hazings they are square again and go back up front.

I can't find a nice square shot of the rear you can see the spacing as she sits now. This is the closest thing I could find...

I can fit my index finger between them at the bulge, and no my hands aren't that girl like...

I think they look better sitting flush with the fenders. Lord knows I don't need the truck 4 inches wider, I take out enough mail boxes as it is...

how much air was in the tires with the 1000lbs to make the 1/8 spacing?

hopefully if i air the tires to the full 65lbs with the washers, it may work, the truck isnt always 12000+ lbs, only when the trailer hitch weight will be added, before i added 2 leafs to the main spring pack, it was just on the overloads, so its probably in the 11000 lb area

did the tire dealer say anything about the washer spacing or the 285s on a 6 inch rim (safety concerns) ?

but i guess i have seen 305/70r16 on the stock 3/4 duramax 6.5" rims

RatherBeMuddin, I see you have the "new" triple exhaust set up. Dual stacks with the single rear to decrease back pressure . I was tempted to do that too but I blew the rest of my money on a new HiPo set of muffler bearings (makes for faster spool-up) .

According to BFG, the minimum rim width should be 7.5" for the LT285/70R17"s. That's 1 1/2" wider that the stock rim (6") on a dually. You will probably have problems getting them to wear evenly.

Big Bob, the 285/75r16 muds i had on my old 97 wore evenly on the stock 6.5" rims, pulled some heavy trailers to, about 18000pds, short trips though,

does anyone have a opinion about the gr 8 washer used as a spacer idea

Here is an alternative to the 'washer spacer' tactic. I drafted this spacer plate (see the pic in my gallery) and took it over to our local vo-tech machine shop. I asked the instructor if one of the kids needed a project for class and had two of them made for free! They are made out of .375 thick steel. This leaves the end of the factory lug stud even with the outside edge of the factory lug nut. .375 is as far as you can go and still get all the threads of the nut to sink into all the threads of the stud. I am hopping that this plate will work with 285's. If it doesn't, I'll use my 2.5 inch spacers, unless some one will trade me my 2.5's for a set of 2.0's. This plate works good dualling 265's. As shown in my gallery, spacing with 265's on stock rims is approx .5 inches. Add .375, and you get about 7/8 inch, which is tolerable. However, I don't think the plate is going to work with 285's. If you need a drawing emailed to you or have questions, please don't hestiate to ask.

JWB

And no, noone makes 1.0 inch spacers. It takes almost a full 2.0 inches to get past the factory lug bolts. I wish it was easy to put longer studs in the hub, that would cure everything. Has anyone done this

I talk to the local tire shop the other day and he said I shouldn't put on the 285, because of the weight of the truck, and the oilfield conditions i will be in, the will probably pop of the rim

he has other customers with huge (bigger then 285) tires on duallys but don't carry more then a couple quads

will gowith my original idea of 235 cooper discoverers
