2003 SO upgrade help
Hey everyone, I know this is an old subject and I did a search to find info without the results I was looking for. So here goes- I tow a 34 ft. 5th wheel and the EGT's kill me. I am thinking a new turbo and smarty. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Look at Water/Meth Injection as a possible additional solution.

The first thing I did was put on a 4" muffler. The oem is choked down to 3" on the inside. Then the turbo and that made a huge difference for the power band and egt. A 4" downpiepe was last. I built my own cuz I knew they aren't very cost effective. Craig

HBird98. Same boat as me w/the SO. Towing EGTs skyrocketed. Best mods in order of priority:
1. SMARTY SR (tow my 13.5K 5er on SW 5). EGT manageable, just keep RPMs up. I've dropped down to 2nd at 8-9,000ft/7% grade and kept EGTs rock steady at 950. The Smarty on SW1 basically makes your output similar to the HO. Best investment I've made.
2. Exhaust Brake. Down same grade, held 55 in 4th w/o touching the brakes!
3. Airdog (or FASS). My Fuel pressure is rock steady at 12-13psi, always!
4. Tire pressure monitors. Saved my bacon twice.
5. Gauges, Great to know exactly what's going on.
6. Air horn (lots of idiots driving out there)
7. Intake manifold and cold air intake, not sure what difference they've made.
I still have the original exhaust and clutch. The clutch is going strong and holds great, even w140K miles on it.
Good luck with your SO. Great truck, once you get the Smarty and basically make it an HO...otherwise it's a pig towing with all the CA emission programming in the ECM...trust me, I tried. Hope this helps.

I don't remember the exact numbers but mine egt was ~ 1200 stock, ~1175 after the muffler change and 1100 after the turbo change. The Predator 100 hp is 1225 max and it is ideal for towing with the exh mods - great power and I don't have to worry about heat. Craig

@Brad, The Smarty will definitely be my first purchase, followed by a fuel system and exhaust brake. It's good to hear the clutch is going strong. Thanks again
