19.5" wheels on a 3rd gen dually?
Looking for feedback on 19.5" wheels and commercial tires on a 4x4 dually. Anyone running these? I'm not impressed with the stock tires (generals) or with any light duty replacement options which I think are only Cooper S/T and Goodyear SRA for the 235 80R17 size.
Does anyone have experience or opinions on:
- tire widths - 225 or 245?
- bolt on wheels (i.e. 8 lug) vs 10 bolt adapters and any 10 bolt wheel like Alcoa?
- do you need suspension mods for these tires?
- maximum tire size without getting a lift
I'd be real interested in hearing from guys in Canada who were able to find conversion kits or wheels in Canada. They seem to be pretty rare. shipping from the US is big $$$$$
kind of torn between bolt on wheels like
http://www.ricksontruck.com/
or using adaptors for 10 bolt wheels like
http://www.chromewheel.com/dominator.htm
any help/opinions are greatly appreciated

I've got a guy down here trying to find me some that aren't such high dollar for the 03 i just bought this week. The tire company where i buy my tires are the ones telling me that i should run the 19.5's. I dont think i like the idea of having some type of adapter on my wheels.

A local tire/wheel shop in Calgary wants to sell me 19.5" steel wheels that fit a Chevy medium duty truck for about 250$ US/ wheel. didn't seem too bad until he told me that he'd need to rebore the center of the wheels to fit the dodge....
I'm not crazy about the 10 lugadapters either but If you need lots of weight capacity on the rear axle, the adapters are the only way to go cause they will let you run 10 bolt wheels that have much higher load ratings than 8 bolt wheels like ricksons.
rich, what diff gears do you have? are you planning on running 245 tires? with a 3.73 rear and 245 tires my axle ratio goes down to about 3.55...not sure If that's going to be a problem for my 14k fiver?

Hey 6string go visit a local machine shop one that has cnc machines ,lathes and boring mills .They should be able to make your adapters to fit what you need .
you'll need to know bolt spacing stock and for 19.5's,
note the rim centers for boring stock center don't forget the shoulder
leave a small centerng hub on the adapter for the 19.5" rim,use steel not alum.
good luck

6STRINGDIESEL i've got 3:73's and since its a dually i can only run them 235 80's on it for now or thats what my tire guy says. i'll probably stick with the 235's cuz thats all i've ran with my other truck. It had 3;55's on it with a 5spd it pulled just fine with the weight i hauled even in the small hills we have here in the hill country. and it looks like you are pushing more power then it was.

I've got Rickson wheels and Michelin 24570R19.5 commercial tires...I'm using a 2" leveling kit, but could probably have gotten by without it...The original Goodyears lasted about 29,000 miles, so I was looking for something a bit better...Ben

Fordzilla, do you have a 3.73 rear ? tow anything heavy ? if you have a 3.73 then you must be running about 1800 rpm in 6th at 70 mph. did you notice an increase in fuel economy with the 245's?
Thanks for the feedback

Then the michelin LTX m/s becomes without a doubt the best tire available in that size. the sad thing is that for the same price, you can get a 19.5" michelin commercial tire that will last at least twice as long if not more

If you look on www.chromewheel.com, the Silver 03 Dually on their photos page is mine about 2 years ago. I ran Goodyear G-124's 265/70R19.5's.
The adapter setup is heavy, I'll tell you that much.
For a loaded truck, the setup worked awesome. I have 3.73's and pulling my 30ft gooseneck loaded to about 14-15K, it had no problem. I ran the EZ/DD2's, DD jammer, DD Airbox and 5 inch exhaust at that time, and it worked great. Mileage wasn't too bad, but it was okay.
Empty, it was not a great ride. I ran about 30 in the rear tires and 45 in the front. I never needed more than 50 in the rear even loaded. Rotating tires every 3K became a hassle, along with keeping them balanced. Balance beads helped some. Problem was the cupping on the GY G124's was fast, thus the need to rotate.
In 15K miles I had 2 tires replaced under warranty for out of round issues and chunking tread. The 4 on the rear in 15K had 4/32nd's of wear on a tire with a tread depth of 21/32nds. Not bad for a truck that at the time, dynoed at 396 HP.
I have pictures on the TDR in my Reader's Rigs, too.
