you should price out a set of 33 inch tires for a 16 and then a 17 inch rim. there will technically be LESS actual rubber purchased for the 17's...but tires for a 17 will usually cost more. 265/70 R17 are the same as 265/75 R16.
anyway...I wouldn't put 16's on...I switched to 17's and I feel they are much better for towing and handling in general.

rich---you're way ahead of me, 17's on a srw are nice for towing...but my next pickup will be a drw. Tire size choices are over rated...drw is the only way to go when towing heavy.
