Question 12MM ARP Head Stud Install Pics & Directions

Finally going to tackle it one stud at a time on my 07 5.9L. Just wondering if anyone has any tips, pictures or directions on how to install them properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated as the 3rd gens are alot different from my old 2001 24V. Thanks guys...

Its a fairly simple task. Just follow the directions. Run the studs all the way down then back them off at least a quarter turn to ensure your torque measurement are reflecting the nut and not the stud seated in the block. Also do whatever you have to to get the stud holes absolutely clean and use the precribed lube for the studs. If you want to, for good measure, some guys run a bottom tap through the holes before cleaning. Both of these tasks are a little harder with the head on. Don't get discouraged by the torque sequences, they are important for torque to yield fasteners. They will be a workout. Since you will have the head on, the torque sequence will serve as the order for doing each of your studs. Pull out a bolt, dress up the hole, install stud and go through torque sequence, then repeat for the other....25 (check). Also not in the directions-- The lower piece of your valve cover will probably have to be machined down on its inside surface IOT clear the studs in the back. You'll do fine just remember what you paid for them and let that be your motivation for precision. Good luck.

Its the farthest back 2 studs (closest to the firewall) when you get the studs installed you can sit the valve cover in place and you'll see how it sits crooked. You'll be able to see where it hits on the inside. There is plenty of extra material where you need to grind. Also once you finish it would behoove you to drive it around for a while, throw some boost to it and put it through a few heat cycles, then recheck your final torque.

Should a guy set the valves again or do you think I would be fine? I'm guessing it wouldn't move much..

You're valve lash shouldn't be affected by the stuff you will need to do, but since it is so easy, it wouldn't hurt to do it while you're in there. I just replaced my injectors again and checked them afterwards. Improper valve lash can affect mileage, power, and a lot of other stuff.

I think I'm going to get my heat cycles and retorques all done first and then do my valves again. Like you said, it's quick and easy to set them anyways. Thanks again for all the great tips, greatly appreciated.

Get a topside creeper. I got one before I did my injectors and it was worth every penny. Now, anytime I do any work in the engine compartment, I use it.

I will be doing mine in the next 6-8 months the same way.. Just take your time. Do one at a time, and tq them to the 1st tq spec, then once all the studs are in go thru the next 2 tq sequences.

All is well. Just going to check them again this long weekend. I love the idea of that overhead creeper!!! Man was my chest and knees sore.
I asked myself "why didn't I take the hood latch off". That's half the reason my chest was sore...
