I have never used them, don't know prices and have never talked to them. But it is my understanding Dave has like a "cottage" you stay in while they work on your truck.

I have been to Goerends. He didn't do my install, but was out there for other reasons which would take up too much time and space here. Anyway, he does have a house next to the shop you can use if staying overnight. I'd call and talk to him, but I'm guessing you'd be there about 5-6 hours for the install and test drive and such if doing a TC/VB. If you want a whole rebuild, it would depend on if he had a core to build for your specific needs that he could do in advance. I believe he gets $400 for the R&R labor. That's pretty cheap when you consider how much it costs to ship a heavy TC and VB. Depending on where you live it might only cost you the fuel to drive back and forth. If he's not too busy, he will tour you around the shop while his guys work on your truck. It's pretty cool to see a cut open TC from all the different companies laying out on a big table.

So I CAN'T afford a 5k tranny but I have a good friend that builds them for a living. I could spend 2k he said he would do all the labor for $300. That leaves 1700 to spend on parts. What parts should I intall and what brand HTS or Suncoast or Dunright or ATS? From the looks of things this is only enough money for a TC/VB how much more to do the bands and input shaft?

So what exactly do the input shafts do? What do they usualy run for?

They have been known to break, usually when towing real heavy or racing, they can destroy the TC when they let go. They transmit power from the TC to the transmission. I think they range from $650ish to $800 ish.

For a 450hp truck can you get away with just the TC/VB? If you aren't too hard on it? ie. no tracks no pulling? Just a full throttle launch once in a while???

IMHO,
A good triple disc billet converter, a billet input shaft, the usual "good" rebuild/upgrade, a performance valve body, and if you have any left over cash (yea, that's a BIG if) the billet output. The output is the easiest one to replace later if you cannot afford it.
That will be a good tranny that will make the truck amazingly driveable and handle a lot of beating on at the 450 HP mark.
If you ask enough people someone will tell you that you don't "need" all of this, but IMO if you want a worry free automatic this is the only way to go. And you have to pull the tranny for the TC upgrade, so this is a great time to upgrade the rest so you don't have to pay the R&R twice.
