04 LED Tail light Succes

To make the tail led's work I had to dissasemble them and rout the wires differently out the ends... kinda like how those little Christmas tree bulb wires come through the holes... I had to rearrange them so they came out accordin to the wiring diagram (Dodge)

Then I had to put a load resistor on each bullb..... four total.

But...

I only had two 6 ohm 50 watt load resistors thinking I only needed them for the flashers to work. Ended up needing two more so I bought a dual coil resistor at PepBoys for Chrysler for $6.00. It works but only 1.5 ohms. Not enough resistance. Brake lights don't get bright enough on that side. I have two more 6 ohm resistors on the way.

They work perfectly... no "Bulb Out" light and flashing works perfect. If you guys want I'll do a detailed picture writeup. The third gen's are tricky cause there is no flasher.

I also put bright blue LED 194 bulbs in the license plate lights. Looks cool as ***** with the red reflections mixing in.

You know, that might be an excellent mod.

So, you are using a single 6ohm resister for each corner?

I'd like to see a picture wrap up when you get it complete.

No I'm using four resistors altogether. If you don't put a resistor on the tail/park light you get a "light out" on the dash. The rear lenses take well to led's cause you can see the entire bulb through the clear red lense.

I'll see what I can do. Getting ready to go on vacation. I buy all my stuff from superbrightleds.com. Resistors are only $4.95 each.

Well, before returning to the service, I was an EE, so I have quite the kit around here somewhere. I need to see what resistors I have lying around.

I guess I could experiment and see what I can come up with. Did you go up from 6ohms and stop at 24?? Have you tried a higher resistance and noticed a change?? I am pretty sure I've got some 50ohm resisters in my kit, and I KNOW I have some 500 and 1k ohm.

Thanks for starting my mind working on yet another mod.

I only did the tails... nothing up front yet.

superbrightled.com sells 6 ohm x 50 w resistors that are encased in an aluminum sheath with cooling fins. They provide a 2 amp dummy load.

thanks hoot

awsome mod hoot. I am in aww of what you have done with your truck. do you have a part number list aswell as a total cost for these mods. I would love to do this also. I also notice in another thread that you said there were some other bulbs that were super super bright. what were those. if you could give me the number for what you used that would be more than awsome. thanks and keep up the awsome work.

I may go with these next... 25 leds per bulb with radially mounted leds for side lighting.

http://autolumination.com/3157_3156.htm

The ones in my truck are from Jam Strait. Red 3157 HR

Sorry no time for a list right now... will be away for a while.

(4) 3157 bulbs anywhere from $6 to 16.99 each)
(4) 6 ohm x 50w load resistor ($20 total)

No other parts needed.

Oh, you might want the (2) license plate 194 size colored bulbs. Be careful cops don't like blue. Had a cop behind me last night and never did a thing... even sitting at a red light right next to me after driving behind me for a good mile.

I can get more specific when I have more time.
