04.5 turbo on 03-04
i'm thinking of buying the 04.5 turbo for my early 04. what are the benefits if any of doing this? more power? more headaches? anything would be helpful, thanks.

I just put an adjustable elbow ($20) on my truck and the boost went from
22-24 PSI to 34-37 PSI.
HE351 turbo= 60mm; 04.5-07
HE341 turbo= 54mm; 03-04
04.5-07 HE351cw 7 blade 60mm/60/9 with 19mm wastegate hole non divided
04.5-07 HE351= 60/88 mm compressor, 60mm exhaust turbine, 9 cm exhaust
HE341 = 58mm inducer
HE351 = 60mm inducer
Both turbine housings are 9cm......

Spinning an HE341 to over 30 psi is asking for trouble. By the time it gets to 35 psi it is pushing extremely hot air and that is no good. The HE341 is essentially an HY35 with a few changes, they aren't lovingly called a nasty 9 for nothing.
The HE351 is really the total next generation of the Holeset turbo and has all the areas updated and addressed, larger compressor does a much better job of moving the air without heating it, larger and different hot side wheel provides better spool and operation across the boost range, the design of the hot side is much closer to what a 12cm divided housing flows rather than a 9cm. The max range of an HE351 is 40 psi before it is pushing hot air. At 34 to 37 psi where these engines run the best it is head and shoulders above the HE341.
EVERYBODY that has either used the HE351 or even boost fooled it to mid to upper 30 psi sees a noticeable SOP gain in mid and upper range. More and better air equals more power. Most see at least 100 and some 200 degrees drop in EGT's at max throttle with a boost fooler. That is a positive that cannot be ignored.
As for the electronic WG, get the manual boost referenced controler and a boost elbow and it works fine.
In short, you should see a noticeable gain in power and drop in EGT's with the HE351. You will see it on the road, on the Dyno, etc.

I would have to agree totally. I felt a huge difference sop. I hit 40psi of boost and the temps are much cooler. I am going on the dyno tomorow and will be able to give some real number gains after. I have seen another truck that did the swap and he gained 50hp on the same dyno. Joe

Yeah, there is no doubt that going from a HE341 to a 351 is a very good upgrade for anyone who has the stock SO turbo. My HE351 got me to 500hp (very warm) and performed flawlessly. There must be something good about it if Nathan at MPI uses the stock HE351 in a set of twins that work awesome in street trim and towing!!!

Check out this thread to for a little more reading, https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...hlight=stocker
Seems to be a worthy upgrade, compared stockers recently and there is a noticable difference in size between the two.
