WICKED,

What about the silencer ring???????????????????????????

If you decicde to make your airbox holey, do NOT go to extreme. I did and now I am buying another airbox because I am going through filters about 2X faster than I should be!!!

I was just mentioning that nobody has chimed in about removing it, since we're on the subject of removing baffles, restrictions, etc. to free up some turbo noise. I'm still considering the swiss cheese mod though. My brother-in-law runs a wrecking yard, so I can get another airbox for cheap if I want to experiment

Wicked,

I would go ahead and swiss it up, but here is a good example of what I would say is a waste!!!!!!! All this airbox is doing is allowing WAY to much under the hood heat into the intake.

THERE IS NO NEED TO BE ABNOXIOUS ABOUT IT.

Leave the directional vanes in the elbow in place. NASA Langley uses directional vanes in the wind tunnel to get the airflow around bends SMOOTHLY. They are much smarter than we are. Otherwise, the air will stack up in the elbow causing turbulence, and reducing airflow volume.
I removed my intake silencer from the truck. Broke the cross pieces out with a chisel. I then used a rotary file to file back the pieces inside the radius. I only removed about 1/16" of material. Just enough to slide a length of galvanized 4" exhaust pipe inside. I epoxied the end of the pipe in place.
This will provide the smoothest airflow, with minimal turbulence between the air filter and the turbo. Smooth, single diameter piping, and smooth curves equals smooth airflow.

You will likely have to get the whole lower elbow. Try a junk yard, eBay, or a dealership. From what I can tell in these threads, anyone who has taken out the vanes, has destroyed them in the process.
