Pleased With J35 Recall Results

I just had the recall done today at the Dodge dealer in Jackson, MS. Here's what I found:

Driving at an average speed of 62 MPH (1800 RPM) on the way to the dealership (on I-55) I reset the overhead (EVIC) to calculate average MPG's. After about 10 miles or so the average read about 19.6 MPG (road was flat and there was no wind).

AFTER having the work performed at the dealership I repeated the test on the return trip. Now the EVIC indicated 23-24 MPG (pretty much the same speed and conditions). Besides the increase in mileage I also feel the power has improved somewhat and I've notice other slight improvements as well.

OK, I realize the "lie-o-meter" isn't always a true indication of actual MPG's but for comparative purposes I think it serve quite well. If in fact I'm now getting around 3-4 more MPG's I'm a happy camper. When I think of all the fuel I've wasted before this recall.......

I may be a bit premature, but my lie-o-meter seems to be reading closer to actual mpg after the J35 reflash. I'll go through a couple of tankfuls before making any conclusions.

I have also had the flash and am very pleased with the results. Overall drivability seems to have improved and throttle response is much better. Before driving around town was, shall I say, sluggish. This is much better. Have not run a full tank through it to check MPG but am going to be interested in the results.

Looking forward to pulling the 5er to see how towing may have been impacted. Anyone have any feedback on towing?

I'll be towing my fiver in about a month and am as interested as you to see how the truck performs. She already had plenty of power before J35. Having driven the truck over the past 3 days since J35 I also notice a big improvement in idling. Before J35 the idle speed would often dip momentarily, which was especially annoying (and dangerous) if I were to let the clutch out at the same moment as the dip and have the engine stall. That problem appears to have been resolved. All in all I have nothing but positive things to say about this recall....

I found out my lie-o-meter, is actually pretty accurite, I did a 163 mile pulling my 13000+# 5th wheel, good wind conditions, some 2 way traffic, city driving, and about 12 miles of that was empty city driving, 163.6 miles, tad over 16 gals of fuel. Pretty close, most of the time my overhead said 10.2-11.8, I can live with that MPG. oh ya I had the J35 done also. Another thing I want to mention, the egr was plugged in the whole trip, I don't think the unplugging really helps during towing, could be wrong though, my empty driving was indicating 16.4-20 when I got on 55 mph roads. The towing mpg, 10.2 was at 65, 11.8 was at 59 mph

Smarty works after the J35

Had the J35 recall work done Saturday morning. Went home and reinstalled the Smarty software and it is working well.

i'm going in this morning.iv'e got about a 30 mile drive home from dealer.i'll give you a seat of the pants update when i get home.also,i'm curious why folks think the overhead mpg is so far off? is there really that much real world data to support this or,is eveyone just jumping on a bandwagon?

I reset my lie-o-meter after every fill up, and it consistently reads 1.5-2 mpg higher than hand calculated numbers.

My 5.9 had the same problem.

However, with the J35 reflash, the overhead read within about .5 mpg of the hand calculated for one tank of gas.

Egr Unplug. Post J35 Recall

I unplugged my EGR after the reflash. Truck ran fine and no noticable change in performance after a 150 drive. Also no new idiot lights upon unplug.

Same here... unplugged the EGR right after getting the reflash. It's good for an extra 3 mpg or so. It makes the annoyance of the engine light much easier to take! Just look at it as any other indicator light... yep, check... the engine's there.
