ECM Programming

I have a bad ECM from the truck getting flooded. The dealership says I need a new one ($1700) because a used one already has a VIN burned into it and it won't take a flash. A guy sells used ones and says people buy used all the time ($600). Is there a way to get around that?

I am pretty sure they are full of baloney, unless they mean the March or so of 09 ECMs which are supposedly locked.

I think you do have to have the used one flashed though.

That I find hard to believe. The processors are not the same in those machines and the pin outs would be less on the 00 ECM...????

Unless you meant a 2010 ECM..

thats what i thought but when i hooked it up to witech it came up as a 2000 model year, then walked thru the process of reentring vin info and reprograming and every thing worked just fine. on gas vehicals its a whole different story. it could have been a vin miss read but thats what showed up when i pluged it in

Wow.. never would have thought you could do that with the change in processor speeds. I would think the PCM could be interchangeable not the ECM with the change from the VP44 pump to a 4 event injection, vin locked injection system..
