Comment?observation On The Emissions Tampering Thread

Agreed that this is illegal and, as such, should not be promoted or recommended on this site for liability purposes...

HOWEVER....

it is absolutely no more illegal than modding a pre-DPF emission truck with a programmer, air box, exhaust, etc, which has not been tested or passed emission testing requirements... much like the sig of the person standing at the pulpit preaching to all of us sinners out here in cyberland... see below.

off rant...

I agree but this is a free site and we have to fallow the rules even if you don't agree. There are many sites out there that will talk about it all day long if you like just not here. But it is funny that in the 1st and 2nd gen sections you can talk about taking off the CAT and making so much black smoke that you black out the hole road (will not meet the year model emission laws that were in place) but that's OK . I don't mind though, just keep to the rules and its all good. I'm just glad to have a site like this were we can all share info for FREE not like the TRD (lot nicer folks too). Also not Cool to single out any one and go at them, its not going to help, they have to have these rules to keep a few people in line and some times it affects us but very little. I really like how this site is run 99% of the time so don't get bent over the little things. Also feel free to take your time and $$ and start your own site and talk about what ever you wish.

Most of the 2nd gens did not have a "cat" - they were equipped with a soot-trap - the ceramic matrix was not coated, but was there to trap the heavy lung-damaging particulates - during a run at highway speeds, the matrix would heat up to avg EGT, generally around 650degF, which would then cremate all the little sooty goobers trapped in the matrix, which would then exit the tailpipe as lung-damaging ash - just as bad, but at least not black and sooty.

That was then - this is now: Congress is all over this emissions vs global-warming stuff, and EPA is gaining power while taking names and making a list, and checking it twice - and it ain't Santa that will come calling - this time, it's personal - first to get hit will be the ones with biggest pockets, such as member-based public websites and 4W\Off-Road emporiums, sawing off emissions equipment and selling EPA-cheating contraband.

Just think: looking at that large list of viewers currently on-site at the bottom of the page, do you know who everyone is? Access is free to anyone around the planet - which ones are avid truck owner-modifiers - which ones are thieves, shopping for likely trucks and parts - and which ones are smog-cops?

You dunno, right? And they're certainly not gonna list it in their sigs. The posted anti-modification emissions policy, enforceable and increasingly enforced by federal law, is official CYA insurance - protecting the forum is sound judgement, imo.

I'm not sure which thread you're referring to but if you see something that looks like it doesn't belong here just hit the in the post and tell us what you think is wrong, that's your job. No need to be a smarty pants when you do, just tell us what you see. The post will arrive in a forum that only admins can see. We'll look at it and make the call from there, that's our job. Normally, if a member reports a post there is something wrong with it but occasionally not. If you would rather, you can pm one of us with a link to the thread or post in question and we'll still look at it but, using the link is faster.

Same thing here, just pulled it from the main page.

I think off road programming and alterations is acceptable correct?
Theres a few folks in CA that have had the luxury of testing with off road equipped trucks that have left the smog testers and CARB scratching their heads. Even with all the emissions stuff removed they are passing the tests...The one that is very close to a failure...but still passing is the opacity.
And that is set at 2010 specs, not current year specs.

I live in a province that does not have any laws or regulations. However, that does not have me feeling like I want to dump a boatload of smog and pollution into the air. If I can pass the tests and be comfortable with what I know is coming out the tail pipe UP HERE then I am ok with that...especially if my fuel mileage says I am saving 20-25% or even better amounts of fuel...that in itself is good for me and the planet. Its the sign of the times and its been coming for a long time to get in step with the smog laws. I personally think that some of what they have done to these trucks is not so much for the benefit of the environment and end user but more so for the benefit of the manufacturer to 'band-aid' the vehicle with what the EPA and the feds seem to think is working.

When I talked to Environment Canada...the head honcho there said he was very concerned with the reports of higher fuel consumption, especially with what happens and what is required during active regeneration.
Sure some folks could care less that a 8,000 pound truck uses this much fuel.
I on the other hand do care...burning 20% or more fuel is supposed to equate to better emissions? sure. At any rate, I PM'd Top before I posted.

Scotty, most folks who have been here as long as you and I know that the biggest problem is talking about removing the cat. Since that's a federal requirement it really doesn't matter where you are in the U.S., it applies. We really don't have much choice here at DTR when it comes to the cats. As to smoke, it does draw attention to the diesel crowd and it's only a matter of time before that gets a universal stamp of disapproval.

I agree Rick, it just baffles me that the results of what some folks have done in the USA is netting a 'pass' with the most strict emission state there and gaining great mpg gains at the same time. Thats what makes me wonder about the current smog rules and requirements. It also has got Environment Canada and CARB asking the same questions. I like the idea of clean air and clean out the tail pipe. If it can be done with better mileage, well I think you get what I am saying...why all the stuff in the first place? I could see it if the trucks that had the changes made failed the smog tests...absolutely I would refrain from talking about it as the end result would negate what I gained...for me at least. I have out grown the black cloud mode. I want good clean MPG with decent power.

If its too sensitive of a topic to openly discuss let me know. I think its something that even the folks that might be 'spying' for rule breakers may be interested in as well. When I first contacted Environment Canada I thought maybe they would black list me. It turned out to be a favorable thing to do. Go straight to the horses mouth so to speak and we are all learning when it comes to the new diesel rules and designs.

I'm done

I have to say that I'm not up to speed about the folks you are referring to getting a pass with their mods. If you'll watch, the trend in the aftermarket manufacturers for the most part seems to be less smoke, more mpg and keep the power too. That's where I think they're headed and that's cool by me. I'd like nothing more than to increase my hp and mileage at the same time and not have to worry about my emissions, it's a win/win! The problem is that over all, the EPA's regs can be met a couple different ways. One is to spend millions testing and tuning and walking a very fine line and the other is to test and tune a little less, bolt something on that will allow you to meet the regs on a broader scale and pass the cost along.

Not all of these trucks come equipped with cats do they? Mine didn't have one? Just throwing that out there cause some guys may have an aftermarket exhaust, but never actually got rid of their cat......cause it didn't exist.

04.5 is where it started on the 5.9. The newer trucks have the particulate filters plus the cat, I believe.

Have been learning on this forum since 2003 when I purchased my first diesel truck. Now driving a 2007 6.7 for about 11 months and 24,000 miles.

My main interest at this time, is trying to determine how this irritating, poorly engineered and fuel wasting emission system can be made to operate more efficiently.

Due to rules on this forum, I find myself spending more time on other sites that do allow freedom of information.

Question do you have stock size tires on your rig? If you're all stock that milage would have me looking for some MPG solutions as well. Good luck bro.

California has no emissions testing for diesel vehicles.

Your '05 came equipped with a cat from the factory. Pre-'04.5 had no cat.
