68 re built in trans magnet ?
Just got back from having a trans service at the dealership, so i climbed under to take a look and i found a magnet stuck to the outside of the pan. I called dealership and asked if they forgot to put it back in the pan and they told me the stock 68re pan has a built in magnet (non-removable)> Is this true? or are they blowin smoke.

The magnet that was left outside the pan was not as described in above post it was only about 1" with no center hole. So that makes me think i will be o.k. Guess i wont know 100% until my next service (which i will be doing). Thanks for the reply.

My trans has the silicon for the seal, i did however call a another dealer and spoke to a tech and he claimed mine would be the larger one with a hole. Then he said some techs use magnets to keep loose fasteners together. I am half tempted to drop the pan to check. probably would not be good to run with out one

68 RFE Issue
Towed 9500# 450 miles one way. Truck pulled great no problems tranny acted like a champ. When returned to house found ATF on slab under truck. (Found small leak in sealant Dodge recommends for their tranny pans) Truck has 42k miles and bought the truck for the GREAT offer 100k powertrain that Dodge was advertising for their HD Trucks. Found out that it does not apply to the diesel trannys just the engine and engine componets. This was stated to myself by 3 dealerships. Long story short dealer wanted 280.00 USD to repair. Bought filter items external/ sump but did not go with the sealant to use on the tranny pan. Insted went with a gasket. I know that it uses 6 qts ATF-4. But when i had checked the level was still around add marking. Can someone comment on if i will need to place more ATF-4 or not. Do not want to over fill/ blow seal. Also has anyone used the gasket type. Input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Built in magnet is bull s#@%
UPDATE, i talked to another service writer @ same dealership, seemed concerned with my plight. He went ahead and authorized the removal of the pan to check for the placement of the magnet. Well guess what, NO TRANS MAG. He went ahead and re serviced my 68rfe Fired his dodge tech(for this and a no show today) I only hope its all good being that i only logged 600 mile without magnet. Always double check peoples work. I hate to complain, but in this case it was well WORTH IT. I will continue to use Quality Dodge for new truck purchases(2) and repairs in the future. Hope this is helpful info.

Good catch.Like you I always double check all work and ask a lot of questions to the point of being a pest. When I pay that much for a vehicle I want the guy working on it to DO IT RIGHT.I don't see any problem going that short time without the magnet.
