Won't downshift when slowing
Hey, I am new at the forum, but I thought I would start off with a problem that just started. I just had new shocks (Bilstiens) and 2" leveling blocks installed. When I got the vehicle back, I found that it wasn't down shifting when slowing like it had before it went into the shop. I had read somewhere that these transmissions were made to slow down when you took your foot off the throttle to help in slowing when towing and that is the way the truck worked before the trip to the shop. Now I haven't checked out the problem completely yet, but I am throwing this out into the forum before I start unplugging and plugging back in multitude of connections on the truck. I am guessing that in removing the old shocks, shock towers and coil spring that some thing came unplugged or broken. Thanks .........Winter in Maine is coming right around the corner......can't wait.

Go to your User CP and fill out your signature. Some of the 3rd Gens. do not downshift. If you have an 06' or an 07' with auto it should. If you have larger tires installed the spedo will have to be recalibrated. It may mess up the downshifting. I think it only does it in Tow/Haul mode. Not sure. Someone on here can answer that. BTW, Welcome to DTR.
As an example, my truck does not downshift in Tow/Haul. The real braking comes from the addition on an exhaust brake. 07.5 come with the exhaust brake from the factory if it is an older truck. Dodge decieded to make it standard and just added the cost into the sticker.

Sorry,
I am just getting up to speed on this site........(computers weren't in my childhood...)
I have an 03 with a 47RE tranny. Right now I have the BFG's @ 265-70R17, but I am going to put new Toyo OC AT's @ 285-75/R17 on this week.
Thanks for the speedo tip.
Is that a given change that has to be made with the larger tires?
Ya think just adding the leveling and raising th truck up 2" on the front could throw off the speedo calibration that much and I wonder if a code would turn up on this?
I will be towing a tractor up some good size hills up here and I will be down shifting with my auto pretty much all the time......WaaaHoooooo

MMMmmmm.... Grits!!
Might be this!?
ALL Dodge truck auto trannys since '01 are subject to having a bad transducer in the valve body. These can and will go out w/out warning at any time. It's no major problem, just a minor inconvienence. My '01 had two replaced and both my '03s had one or two in them. #56028196AD is the number and should be readily available at any dealer. The not downshifting is the most noticeable symptom.

While slowing down...is how I read it.
47RE has one frustrating aspect, IMO. It won't downshift into second at all and goes directly to first... but only under 12 mph! (speeds may vary a bit as this is with my oversized tires).
It's fine when empty but with a load I don't like it. I have gotten into just pulling it down into 2nd when turning up a hill, etc., if I'm below 20 mph. Will go to second smoothly and reduced smoke and lag when accelerating.
I also lock OD, out at all times, below 50-55 mph!
Works well for me... hope these tips help you?!

Yes, it is. The pan and filter have to be dropped to get to it. Normally this will throw a CEL, but not always. It reads fluid temp and pressure and based on math and other algebra stuff, decides how to act. RowJ has some good rercommendations. That's how I drove my 47re's.
