A large tractor tire tube. Cut in half and filled with sand and then tied on both ends. One around each wheel well and you have about 600 pounds.

When I lived in Iowa, and couldn't find enough farm girls, I would buy a 1/4 scoop of sand dumped in the bed of my old Chevy beater. Worked great and had sand for when I was stuck, not if, it was 2wd. At the time I didn't care about the sand blast job I gave anyone behind me until the sand froze up.
The last year I was there I was working in a steel production shop and I had a shell on. I loaded a 15 gallon steel paint bucket with punch press leftovers from a 1/2" plate job we had done. It took a forklift to put it in the truck. I sealed the steel lid on and anchored it to the bed between the wheel wells. I tied it through the rust holes in the bed.
I do not need it anymore as I live in sunny socal. I actually miss winter a lot, maybe not enough to move back to it, but I do miss it.

If you want to see what to do with them when they jump in the back of your truck, search "the amazing racist-mexican" and watch the video... I would post a link but there are some bad words in the video...

I usually fill my auxillary tank with diesel. Thats 110 gallons at about 7 lbs. per gallon. It does ride better and if I am low on $$ for fuel I just use some of my weight till next paycheck.
