wierd shut off

tonight my dad climbed in his 06 cumins stock and at first had the wrong key it was a Chevy key to other truck he went to start it but didn't put the key in then went and got the right key and when he started it it ran for like 3 sec and then shut off started back up and did same thing like 4 times then when he tried to start it again it wouldn't start
so we called the dealer they think it may have set off the security theft thing even tho the Chevy key wasn't a chip type it was to older vehicle so in the end it had to be towed to the dealer so we wait ....
anyone ever have this ??

Heard of it a few times on here, both of them ended up getting towed also. At least one that I remember was just a key (the correct key) programming issue.

You sure that Chevy key didn't have a chip, they can be preeeety small....

Oops, have to hate it when that happens. He won't do that one again I guarantee. At least he was at the house and not out of town when it happened.

Sounds like the Sentry system at work. Truck probably has grey keys and he must have used a reg black headed key. What happened is how the system works. You don't see the keys lose memory to often but it is possible. Hopefully the dealer will just have to reset it. If this is the case, the grey key thing, and you haven't had it towed yet, you can try to unlock it yourself. I think you can just put the correct key (grey head) in turn it to run, not started and let it sit for about an hour with key on. This may do it. BOL

I have the black key, and when I tried to start my truck with a spare cut key I had made, it did the same thing, ran for about 2-3 seconds then died. I put the regular key back in and it fired right up no problem. I checked for codes and it threw a code but cant remember the exact #. Glad I didn't have to have mine towed. That would have been an expensive experiment.

cooper--your 06 is a different animal than an 05. Your key should have the transmitter as part of it now. That is the next gen of sentry system. I have it on my '06 and I hate it. I never used my key fob to lock or unlock the doors in my previous trucks. I always had just a flat key to keep in my pocket instead of looking like a dungeon master carrying all 20 of my keys.

Now I have to open it everytime with the key/fob or the horn goes crazy. Even if I don't use the key/fob to lock it and use the switch it does this.
