Why are our brake pads tapered?

Not all pads for all trucks and SUVs are tapered. Ours are. When the pad is new, it has a smaller surface area than when the pad has worn down.

Anyone know why that is?

The taper helps prevent vibration. Vibration of the pad in the caliper is what causes that really annoying squeal we all love so much, and has been a real problem in dodge trucks over the years.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Quicker break in. Less vibration potential on thick pad.
