Why does the Baldwin 7977 and Fleetguard look so different?
OK guys, I switched my 07 over to the Baldwin 7977 last filter change. I still have a couple of the fleetguards as well. The Baldwin has an indentation at the Cap end of the filter and the Fleetguard does not. The fleetguard has a lip that hangs out a ways to clip onto the cap, the Baldwin does not...
WHy the differences? Could the Baldwin allow unfiltered fuel to Pass through??????

I've been useing the 7977 for a few changes now, mine snap into the cap. Maybe not as tight as the fleetguard but still snaps in. The seal for fuel filtering is at the bottom where the 0-ring is.

The Baldwin filter is the equal to the old version of the Fleetguard Filter. The Fleetguard filter has been upgraded to have the lip on the end to clip on to the cap. The indentation on the end does not mean anything, it is just part of the design. Fleetguard now has an ultra low sulphur diesel version of this filter. The part number is FS19856. The gasket is made especially to be used with ULSD.

People been using the older technology filters for years using biodiesel without issues, and bio is much harsher on the materials than ULSD.

The Baldwin 7977 is a 5 micron filter, the 'new' Fleetguard FS19856 that came out over a year ago, is a 7 micron filter.
Baldwin used/uses that style top on their 10 micron filters that were/are for our trucks as well prior to coming out with the 5 micron. So the 'style' of the top did not change, just the filtering capabilities. It makes a good seal and functions properly.
Pretty much all the gasket materials tend to 'swell' regardless of manufacturer of the filter. The material compositions were changed because of 'break down' due to exposure/use of bio diesel some time ago. The breakdown problem was occurring when bio diesel was used with LSD fuel - something to do with additives or additive changes in the LSD. The ULSD removed the lubricity additives, that is probably what helped it to 'stick' less to the cannister, making it a little more difficult to pull apart, giving the appearance that it was swelled. I'd rather have it stick a little, swell a little, or whatever that makes for a nice and tight seal.
