whistle over 30 lbs boost

My truck has suddenly developed a wistle like noise over about 30 lbs of boost - almost sounds like something is leaking air, but I can't find any loose connections. It is a strange noise - might even be a real high frequency vibration of something - doesn't matter what gear the truck is in. It starts about 25 psi - but over 30 psi is loud enough to nearly dround out the turbo whine - and I have the silencer ring removed !

Any thoughts ?

Re:whistle over 30 lbs boost

I have pretty much the same mods as you including the EDGE box. I can get to about 36lbs with my current mods and yes I get a whistle of sorts above 30lbs. I don't have any leaks that I know of and I just figured it was a harmonic issue w/turbo at that particular level of performance. I don't have my Silencer Ring out. But don't really mind the sound that much. I really only hit 35 - 36lbs when towing up a good grade. I will say that it caught my attention the first time I got the monster to that level for a period of time. I'm quite sure that it's common, and quite sure that it's not a leak. I've had a turbo leak under pressure before and the whistle that is produced is so loud, that you can't even drive!

my 2 cents...

Re:whistle over 30 lbs boost

OK - thanks for the response. It may have been there all the time and I just started noticing it. Yes i only hit that much boost with a load as well. And Usually the radio is up loud enough that I don't hear it - but I was towing a load the other day and I had someone else in the car (unusual for me) so the radio was down and I heard the noise. It has probably been there all the time. Also, I figured if it was a leak I probably would be able to build that much boost. I did notice that it will do it at lower boost levels when ambient temp is real cold. Guess I'll just keep an eye (or ear) on it and see if it gets any worse or changes.

Thanks,

Rob

Also the same mods but never had any whisle to speak of. Mine will hit 38psi when towing heavy and 35-36 empty. The only way you know it is that high is to look at the guage, no change in sound with boost.

Re:whistle over 30 lbs boost

Well..... it's not really a whistle that were talking about (me anyway). If you were to whistle a little tune and then call that a high pitch whistle, the whistle that I'm talking about is more of a medium wistle :

It only come on at boost pressures above 30psi, and get's a little more noticable as the boost climbs from there. VERY common. My partner's rig does the exact same thing. You even more noticable with the cold air intakes. Purely a harmonic sound and not a leak. As far as the 38PSI goes.... check that guage, it's probably bad ;D mine is dead-nuts on :

Just joshin ya, I have found that guages, boost in particular can vary as much as 5psi +-. I think that were all in the same ball game +-1 - 2 psi. I think your fine mister KTM.

By the way, what ktm do you have?

Yep guages can all read a little different, but everyone seems to think theirs is dead on , I have an X-Monitor to measure mine.

Oh ya that boost happens when I am grossing say around 31,000#'s. So if you through enough weight on yours and hold her down to say 3000rpms you never know :

Had many a KTM's in the past...current stable incudes an '02 520 EXC for the dirt, and an '04 950 adventure S for dual sport/street. You a fellow orangeman yourself ?

No I'm not a fellow orangeman.... could never afford that color! I did however race a heavily modded KLX 650. Green was a little cheaper at the time. Maybe some day I will be able to afford orange, I do know that it is one heck of a machine.

Re:whistle over 30 lbs boost

Did the EZ allow you guys to develop that much boost, or did you modify your wastegates?
Thanks Jason

I'm guessing they must have installed the Boost Elbow from Edge. I was under the impression that the stock boost was 26psi. I'm wondering if there is any benefit to installing a boost elbow with no fueling box and if the computer will throw a code for overboost? ???

Re:whistle over 30 lbs boost

I will check out my EZ when it comes in. I hope it comes with a boost elbow. Does anybody know for sure if this is what allows the extra boost? I was reading the Power Edge EZ article and it staes there will be no adverse affect from not running the boost elbow.

Re:whistle over 30 lbs boost

dido on the boost, mine reads about 38psi when in higher gears and on the floor. I have the elbow and also have wastegate shimed about 1/8 inch.It makes kind of a sucking sound when it is up there, kind of like air rushing in.runs great and pulls great.
