What's up w/ my tranny?

Towing the 6500lb boat lately, I can't get the tranny to shift into 4th gear. I can run it up to about 75-80 and even let off the gas and it still wont shift. When everything gets good and hot, 15 miles or so, and I slow down to 55-65, it will finally shift, then it will start shifting like normal. This just started, so I know I dont have a warming up issue. I did a fluid change last month to the Castrol ATF+4, pan drop only, about 7 qts. I dont see how this would change anything. What do you guys think?
Thanks,
Tom

Sorry in advance but, are you checking the transmission as per your manual? It sounds like fluid level. I thought the transmision took more than 7 quarts. Beyond that I do not know.

The old fluid was a dark red in color, and did have a very faint burned smell to it. The reason I only put 7 qts in is that is all it would take. I drove the truck a few miles to warm the fluid, I checked the levels and added as needed. THere is no way I could of added a total of 9 qts, and I do have the BD deep pan. Does this sound right? I have also checked the fluid level many times(hot and cold) and hot, it's at the top of the XXX marks.

Of course I'm checking it in neutral, but there is no way I could get 9 qts in and keep it in the hatch marks. Is everybody w/ hi-cap drain pans adding 9 qts?? Are you guys thinking I'm too low or too much fluid, to cause shifting problems?

How important are these band adjustments? I've heard they are not needed until the miles are racked up?? I'm at 68000

Well, maybe that's my problem. I'd really like to know, is this something a tranny shop has to do? Is there directions on how to do this, if I wanted to try it?

Sounds like your are having problems. You need to hook the truck to a scanner and drive it and see if the computer is comanding it to shift. It could be an electrical or mechanical issue but either way quit driving it and get it checked out, before you do further damage.
