What's an 06 sposed to sound like?
I had my truck to a local auto repair shop to look at getting the Nelson muffler installed. The owner (who has a 98 12v Cummins) said mine's too noisiy, that I have a couple bad injectors. He said they've had a few problems with injectors on an 06..?
This is my first CTD and really don't know a lotta people who have them. When I got home I opened the hood and listened carefully, there is a bit of diesel 'knockity knockity' going on, could that be the bad injectors he was talking about?
I'm going to stop by the dealer Thursday to get their diesel guy to have a look.
I normally use additive, gone from Howes to Howes Meaner Cleaner and now am using Kleen Flo. Last time I filled up unexpectedly though (found some cheap stuff) and added a half tank without using any, so when I got home today I added lots. (The owner of the repair shop uses Stanadine.)
Anyhow, looking for some input so when I go to the dealer I look like I know what I'm talking about!

Just so I understand correctly......a guy at a shop listened to your truck and automatically diagnosed it as having bad injectors?
Did the guy also tell you that he had an oil rig in his backyard worth millions?
By the way, don't overdose on fuel adds.

ULSD = low sulphur fuel? Yah, I'm using the additives mentioned in the first post.
In all fairness, the guy's an experienced mechanic who owns his owns shop, and also happens owns a CTD. He's vey well respected in the local rodding community, he knows way more about a Cummins than I do (but doesn't everyone?)

I have an 06 and have listened to others, mine sounds the same as theirs. As compared to my friends 04.5 mine is a lot quieter than his as far as the normal clatter stuff. In fact, when the ULSD hit our local station he was REALLY complaining about the clatter getting a lot more noticeable. Mine had more of a tinny sound to the clatter with the ULSD. I started adding PS+MMO mix and mine is now even quiter than when on LSD.
I've read most all the posts her and elsewhere regarding injector failure, and most if not all reported a rise in their oil levels with fuel when they had injector problems. If you are doing oil analysis at your oil changes, even a little bit of fuel in the il will be detected. That would signal the beginning of an injector problem. Since this is also MY first diesel, and not knowing what the right or wrong sounds are, I am just watcing my oil level and doing the oil analysis. I kind of think a bad injector has a very distinct sound that we would be able to notice. I also wonder if it might not be seen with a rail pressure gauge, maybe some kind of flickering in the gauge needle? Surely you would also notice a power change?
Your mechanic at your dealership should know how to test them if he feels there is a problem.
Others here have had bad injectors, hopefully they might be able to tell you about their symptoms.
