What would cause trans to shudder in reverse?

I have recently had the trans rebuilt (approx. 1300 miles since) and I have had to readjust the on the front and rear bands. I thought I had everything perfect and the trans was doing great but one day last week while backing into a parking space at work i noticed a lot of shudder when I gave it a little gas. it has since continued to do it everytime i reverse the truck and sometimes its revs some before it starts the shuddering. anyone have any idea's on what the problem may be?

I have check the fluid level and its perfect. this dodge auto trans stuff has me to the point i am about to get rid of this truck. I love the cummins but they didnt give it a good auto trans mate.

any help would really help me out!!! thanks

More than likely a torn seal inside the trans.. when you say you adjusted the bands, did you adjust both? The one that you can get from outside is only the "kickdown" band, the one inside is the low/reverse band. But a shudder in reverse means its time to pull the tranny again....

yea both bands have been adjusted to specs.

a torn seal......I hope that isnt the case! boy do I hope that isnt it. that will be the final reason for this truck to go and I really dont want to see it go.

why do you think the seal would be gone so soon?

The seal was most likely not installed straight, or there might have been a burr on the drum where it rides that is causing an internal fluid leak--ie: drop in pressure....how long has it been since the tranny was gone though??

With a rebuild that recent I would assume it was a problem with install, or a but on the drum...also I have seen the drum actually crack all the way around...couldn't see the crack until it was put on a jig, and pressure tested, then a slight tap with a hammer made it a two piece drum

It was my fault with the install..I forced the front pump back in, and it wasn't lined up right I had that tranny out 4 times before I found the crack

well would that happen upon reassembly of the internal parts or the actual transmission?

It is the pump cause this is the exact same thing that happened to mine 500 miles after having mine built I would not wait long to get it fixed because you will eventually just end up reving the motor and not moving anywhere I barely made it back to HTS to get it corrected

OH and I forgot try not to hit the throttle hard in reverse just makes the problem worse

so your thinking its the pump.....huh? can you explain a little more?

UPDATE!!! I pulled the pan and found a piece of metal in the bottom. its about 9/16" long and just a touch over a 1/8" thick. I will try to snap some pics of it. its aluminum and really looks like a tooth off of something.

It sounds like reverse drum has hot spot or band is burnt up. I don't think it is a pump or you should have problems in forward gears also. You need to check reverse pressure port for proper pressure. A bad or mis-installed reverse servo seal or sticking valve in valve body can make trans lose reverse pressure which will cause band to burn up.
