what transmission does it have
well I have put 5600 miles on it since I bought it and it has a 4speed W/ over drive at least it shifts 5 times so I'm guessing it's a 5 speed
I get almost 22mpg bob tail and 16.2 towing our 30ft 5th wheel

Gear ratios:
1------2-----3----4-----R
2.45 1.45 1.00 0.69 2.21
Maybe you're experiencing shuttle shift?
45-52mph is TC lock-up

what transmission does it have
The 48RE is an electronically-governed, four-speed heavy-duty overdrive automatic transmission, stronger than its predecessor, the 47-series.

No...no...no, just razzin' ya
Your engine/tranny works like two fans, the engine side fan blade turns and pushes fluid against your tranny side fan blade causing it to turn which drives your wheels.
Idling at 6-700RPM's does not allow enough of a flow of fluid to turn the Tranny side fan blade so your able to sit still with out stalling.
TC (Torque Converter) lock-up is a plate that engages at a certain speed/RPM to give you a direct 1 to 1 contact of driving force rather than the fan blades mentioned above.
TC Lock-up is similar to driving a stick when you let off the clutch. It allows for minimal loss of power.
Arbitrary Numbers Example: No lock-up = 75% of engine power gets to tranny, Lock-up equals 97% of power being transferred.
