What rpm do you tow at?

what rpm do you tow at? what rpm do you try to stay around. if our engines make most torque at 1500-1600 shouldnt we stay at those rpms?

I tow at 1800 rpm's in 6th gear with the NV5600. See my signature. I am about to purchase an 06 with 3:73's and I guess a 47RE 4 speed auto mush box. The O/D ratio in the mush box is the same as my 6th gear and I will tow at 1800 rpm with the 06 if and when I get it. That equates to 66 mph.

If I had 4:10's the RPM would be 2000 in the 06.

What he said, plus keeping the revs under 2,000 I get better mileage, the 35's have helped my 6 spd manual.

RPMs for me make no difference, since it'll vary with the terrain
What IS IMPORTANT is my speed!
If your towing an RV like I do, the tires are only Speed Rated @ 65 MPH
So for the mileage gain & safety issue, I tow @ 60-62 mph

I try to keep around 1800 - 2150 rpm. 1800 is going about 60 and 2150 is about 70. If I run at around that rpm than it tends to hold the hills really well. That and the engine isn't working as hard. If you run just at 1600 than you don't give yourself any grace rpm between the 1600 rpm of peak torque and the amount you'll slow down when you go up the hill. If I run at 2k, than I still have 400 rpm to slow down and still keep it above peak torque so I don't lug it.

It all depends what setup your running.

With my SPS66 it tows best at about 2,100 - 2,300 rpm with a heavy load to keep on top of the turbo without smoking and choking...

im happy somebody asked this, i was curious myself. my EGTS seem to be the best around 2000-2300 but i was affraid running for any distance at this RPM would hurt the motor. Anybody know if its OK to run the back roads for any kinds distance at these RPM's?

Thanks,
Tom

i have an easier time pulling at 65-70 mph (2k-2500 rpms) than i do trying to hold 60 at <2000 rpms when im real heavy.

you can run those RPMs all day long, the Engine is made to run like that...

Yeah, these things will run at 3k all year long as that's what they were made for. No worries at all.

I tow at 70 MPH which is at 1950-2000 RPM on my truck. I find my best mileage is around 1900-2000 RPM. However, when pulling grades, you will find that the higher RPM you maintain the better your EGT's will be and the better mechanical advantage you have and that's much easier on your drivetrain which will result in better mileage in the hills because of less strain or lug on the engine.
