I'm with Festus, on all points. No need to jump all over the guy.
All good advice. Take some reasonable precautions but the roads are quite travelled and we do help people out up here.
Enjoy the trip, it's a beautiful drive.

One question.
I've never heard of insurance NOT covering you in North America. Do you have policies like that in the states? My wife has been in insurance for 30 yrs and the only out-of-country issue is in Mexico.

Festus,
I didn't say you've never pulled heavy; what I specifically mentioned was the risk of overdriving your headlights on roads you've never seen before. As for the rest of your second post, you actually supported most of what I said.
Regardless: I took your comment as calling me a liar, and I don't take that well from anyone. I should have ignored it, but wasn't in the mood to do so at the time, therefore, I owe you an apology. Not for disputing what you said, but rather for the manner in which I did it.

First off...Welcome to DTR....Second Welcome to Alaska.
Where in Ak are you coming to? Don't know where you are, but you will be going from spring to winter, dry roads to slush to snow/ice pack. We had 50 below in march last year, and was the coldest March in recorded history for this area. Good spare tire for truck an trailer, spare fuses. Like most said cold weather gear, but that depends on where you are headed. Anchorage you can get away with Columbia gear, Interior or N.Slope you will want something more substantial. Throw in a tow strap and a shovel. A camera is a must. You coming by your self, or with family? There will be a lot of truck traffic, we start construction in mid April, and I am expecting a lot of freight before then. Get a CB a hand held would be fine, say hello to them as they come up behind you, once they know you are on the air it helps them pass you in a safer manner. Before I retired from driving I had been driving semis from Prudhoe to Miami, Banger Maine to LAC. Have a safe trip...I can assist between Tok (pronounced Toke) and Delta Jct.

I don't know if some one has said it, but belt tensioner, mine locked up the other day, I was stuck. However, Napa was across the street.
Take all the belts, hoses, filters, etc. And all the tools to change that stuff. An extra spare tire and good jack and lug wrench too.

I have read all the post, never made the trip, the one thing I did NOT see posted was a good quality first aid kit. I have had to work on one of my vehicles and busted a knuckle, turned out I had to give my self 4 stitches. I hope your trip goes well and without a hitch.

it's true, chances are you can do the entire trip without ever having a problem, but when you do have a problem, you're gonna wish you had a lot of the stuff listed here. like everyone else says, its better to be safe than sorry.
I am sure this thread has done nothing but freak you out though, and make you second guess every thought you had about driving to alaska, its a good time though, enjoy it.
