"High Idle" is the max. RPM the engine will turn if u hold your foot on the floor in neutral. These days, its a setting in the configuration of the engines ECM. Days ago you could pop the cover off of the fuel system and start twisting on a screw and get some more revs out of it... not anymore. Not sure about different aftermarket programmers/tuners. They may allow for changes to high idle settings.

He is just kidding.......

High idle is a built in program (either by your dealer or a box like Smarty) that enables a feature to kick the idle up to 1200 RPM (approx) in cold weather. An idling diesel is not going to generate enough heat to warm the engine in cold weather, hence the high idle.

Your dealer should enable it for free. If not buy a Smarty, you'll be glad you did.

I don'tknow who hates it? I love mine. Take the dog out in the morning, start the truck, let the oil pressure stabilize and then crank her to 1300 to 1400 rpms for a couple minutes while the dog sniffs a bit and she is good to go.-------> The truck that is!

I also thought that "High Idle" WAS redline, while "FAST Idle" was ~1000-1500rpm used to speed up warm-up. Either way, our trucks have it built in, either automatically (~1K rpm when the engine is too cold) or up to 1500rpm, user selectable if you have it 1) Enabled and 2) Have an automatic.

Hi Idle is max RPM setting on the pump or program. On the 12V CTD it is around 2800-3000.The 24V it is 3500. It also seems to be called hi idle when you bring the rpms up off idle to aid warm up.I dont agree with hi idle being max rpm,it is misleading, but that is what it is.

I was wondering if the dealership had to install this feature or if it comes stock in some trucks? Mine does it and I never took it to the dealership.

Your truck does it up to 1000rpm. That is automatic high idle.

Manual high idle (won't work on 03-04 models). It lets you go between 1100-1500 rpm's using the cruise control system.

My 5star dealer has no clue what high idle is.
I fought like crazy to get it enabled on mine, had to show them my owners manual and beg

What are the negatives to enabling high idle features.

No negatives to it just allows you to warm up faster or keep it warm when idling. It is on the 04s just needs to be enabled with scantool Im not about on 03s.

If there are no negatives...why isn't this standard instead of an option? Maybe an option to turn it off, instead. Oh well. Hopefully picking up a new truck today. I will make sure to have them turn it on.

Thanks
