what happens if i remove the oil filler cap
what should I expect if I remove the oil filler cap while the engine is running. Should there be positive pressure, a vacume or nothing. When I look in the hole should everything be covered in oil? I removed mine and it seems dry off to the front and I do see a little bit of oil more torwards the rear. Should I be able to see fresh oil being pumped up to the valve cover?

I forgot to put mine on after an oil change (got distracted by a beer). You quickly notice the oil flying out and it made a "hollow" sound. Only ran it for about 10 secs it still splattered pretty good. Took awhile to find the cap also, it had rattled off the engine and hid under a tire.

Nothing - at least at idle. The return line for my by pass oil filter is thru a Amsoil oil return line fill cap. A great cap I might add! I have removed it under idle to see the flow of oil from the return line from the by pass filter. NOTHING but a stream of oil. No spashing or anything else. Again, that is at idle. PCM

OK:
1)Why are interested in what you should expect with the oil cap removed with the engine running?
2)If it is oil pressure you are worried about (or lack of) look at your gauge on your dash, that should help you some

I was worried about oil pressure. I removed my cap and there wasn't the normal sound of air and oil splatter that I was used to with a gasser.
I have normal oil pressure on the gauge. I don't see much oil in there but its running. Even though I have lost power but that is because of the codes that went off which included High rail pressure.....
My oil looks fine. I don't see any other problems.

OK. Just for future reference, if your gauge says you have oil pressure, you are getting oil to the top half of the motor.

Just an FYI.....our oil pressure gauges are not really oil pressure gauges. They are dummy gauges that read what Chrysler wants it to read as long as you have a certain very low minimum of oil pressure. Pretty much worthless. Sad.
