What to do with my 48RE??

I just got a brand new truck with a 48RE and have heard that if you tow with it you may want to upgrade the tranny. . . So my question is what should I do to upgrade and what should I expect to pay (ball park figure) I would want to build it so it will last forever wheather I am towing or not and also if I upgrade the tranny will it effect the waranty? I just want it to be reliable no matter what I am doing towing heavy or just driving. One more question. . .is there any advantage to upgrading the trany before it goes south, price wise or other?

thanks in advance
Jared

Your transmission should be fine just like it is if you do proper maintenance on it. Change out the fluid and filter on a regular interval.

If you want to add extra transmission fluid capacity you could add a Mag-Hytec Double Deep pan that will add 4 extra quarts of fluid. That will help it stay cooler. http://www.genosgarage.com/prodinfo....=MH-727DD-9803

Also, if you have plenty of money to spend....you may want to upgrade your Torque Converter and Valve body from one of several different aftermarket transmission cos. DTT and Goerends and HTS seem to be very popular here.

If you plan to upgrade power, you will eventually want to upgrade the transmission. Having said that, I have 64,000 trouble free miles on my transmission and im currently running a Smarty on level 9 and tow fairly often.

Replace nothing!

Tow with it and see how you like it. Break in your truck and drivetrain, and put enough miles on it that you understand how everything is supposed to feel. Then, if you don't like something, upgrade. But know what you don't like before you replace it!

Thats bull hickey ! I have nearly 100k on mine, and it tows just fine. Just take care of the maintanance, make sure you tow properly, and you should get many happy years out of your 48RE.

my old ram has almost 200K on the orginal tranny. no need to beef it up if you are not doing anything else with with it.

I wouldn't do a thing until after the 3yr/36000 mile warranty for the drivetrain. Just drive it. You will have all that time to research on what to do. These trannies just don't normally break. Few people have issue but not all. Keep your coin in your pocket and enjoy the ride. I don't care for the TC to much on my truck but it is not bad enough to spend 3,500 dollars to upgrade it. For that price it actually does perty good.

106k miles of hard towing(10k-15k lbs) and tranny still works fine.

if you are not going to put power adders on your trk I would leave the transmission alone. the 48re is alot better stock than the 47re. they were a joke.

One of the problems many have with a Dodge transmission was that until late last year you could only get AFT+4 from Dodge or you had to use Amsoil universal trans fluid. So by using the wrong fluid it led to many screwed up transmissions because the wrong fluid was used.

Huh? I'm running Chevron 30 weight hydraulic oil in mine.

The 48RE should be just fine for at least 100,000 miles unles you add some serious HP. If it becomes a problem with added HP it will be a slipping locked up TC. Then you can deal with it. Forget it for now. Enjoy your truck.

Well mine is the exception. Mine is a piece of crap. My 05 6speed was so much better. I am kicking myself everyday for getting the 48re. My truck is under lemon law right now. I am just wairing to see what they will do. I have not abused this truck and broke it in the right way. No extra power either. I got out pulled the other day by a 80 s model 1500 chevy. My truck is getting laughed at by everone and I named it buzby becuase thats all it does.

I took mine on a 15,000 km trip into the north & CGVW was about 18,000 lbs and worked like a dream over some pretty good hills.

I just had mine rebuilt at the dealer with a new tc. They had to get a tc from Aamco because the oem ones were on backorder for a month. It's still having issues with od lockup slippage. I'm thinking about a valve body upgrade now. The odometer just hit 60,000 kms.
