What could cause High EGTs

It seems that my egts are higher than most that post their temps. I see 950-1400 while cruising 65mph at 1700 rpm. I do not have a programmer or box. On the flats it will run 950-1100 and on slight inclines it can reach 1350-1400. I am pulling a 12 ft enclosed trailer at maybe 4000lbs. When I had the quad installed and on 60 it would reach 1600 pretty easy so I took it off to help keep the temps down.Has anyone found any causes to higher then normal EGT's or is this normal. Alot of people say they never see temps over 1250.

hmmm....maybe your gauge is way wrong. those temps are way outta line...950-1400 while cruising is not good at all! is you intake somehow seriously blocked or are you having a turbo problem?

Cruising empty I only see a Max of 900 deg. Load up 10,000 lbs and I can hit 1250 pulling a grade or more if I keep my foot in it. Very controlable with the go pedal. You may have an injector going south.(sticking). Take it to the dealer and have a balance test run on the injectors. Just a thought.

I do seem to be having more smoke then i did before i used the quad. I never had a black bumper till I used the quad(not saying quad was the problem)and now it is always black. I have just over 100k miles on it now. Any ideas on checking the turbo?. I have thought the injectors might be a problem but I do not get smoke on startup or fuel in the oil. I will try to get the injectors tested ASAP.

With that kind of mileage it may also be time for a valve adjustment hence the black smoke. If I rember correctly that should be at around 130,000 miles. I can't remember for sure.

How does the exhaust sound? your cat could be getting pluged. A boost leak could cause a problum.

No cat(will that cause more smoke) and I will see what the boost is doing. The boost readings with a leak should be fairly low i am guessing.

I have the same truck. I have seen 1350 pulling a 13k 5er up hill at about 8500 feet ( altitude). Are you sure your egt probe is about center inside the manifold and not nearly touching. Pull your probe and see if it has a hot spot.

I agree with Ramrodd that your cat maybe getting pluged.

How about just a bad egt probe or maybe its on its way out??????

I'm on my 3rd one in 40K.

Also check the air filter, if its time to change it then that will also put your egt's through the roof!!!!!!!!

Check your air filter for restrictions. While you are there check your after cooler and condensor fins for bent over fins and straighten them out. Check the grade of diesel fuel for proper Cetane for your area in Colorado. Also check your probe for proper resistance and depth in exhaust as this might cause your gauge to read off. Check your antifreeze and radiator for corrosion and engine fan clutch for proper engagement or disengagement.
