Water pump change-- Grrrrrr
About a year and a half ago I had bought a rebuilt water pump from Napa after noticing that my original was dripping a little. Later I found out I should have gotten a new one from Geno’s but since I already had it I kept it. A few weeks ago I finally got around to changing it because it started making noise and was leaking more.
Thanks to the wonderful posts from our members, I flushed the system, did not have any problems with the rad drain, removed the serp belt and got the old pump out.
I spent hours trying to get the new pump on. I could put the old pump back on and off with no problems but absolutely could not get both bolts in on the new pump. To make a very long story short, it turns out the rebuilt pump I got from Napa (part number 58-629) looks identical and had the same “Made in England” castings. However, the bolt holes were very slightly different (needed calipers to see it) and the pump shaft stuck out on the engine side a very small amount more than the old pump. Grrrrrrr.
I went to AutoZone and got a new pump for 19 bucks less than I paid Napa for the rebuild and there was no core deposit. The AutoZone pump fit just fine (Next time I will order one from Geno’s).
I had saved the receipt and took the pump back to Napa. The kid there said “Uh, you bought this pump over a year ago”. I said “And yet it still doesn’t fit”. I am not knocking Napa, they did give me my money back.
Anyway, once again, our members posts were invaluable and I had the truck back on the road within an hour of bringing the new pump home.

Bark,
Sorry to hear about your troubles. Napa carries two water pumps for the 5.9 CTD Dodge. Part # 58 629, which you had is an A-1 Cardone re-manufactured pump. I tend to steer clear of Cardone parts due to problems with quality and longevity. The other pump available is a Gates part#43526 which is new and runs about 50.00 or so but lists for 73.00. This one is also available at Geno's for significantly less

Yup, from now on, Im gonna go through Geno's when possible. Never gotten a wrong part from them yet.
Glad you got the NAPA one on finally. The one I had would not have fit with a sledge hammer.

I'm not a fan a AZ. It's been a long time since i got ny quality parts from them. Especially the brake pads. They wear out fast. the LAST set I got there, with lifetime warranty, went about 8 miles. All of the brake surface flew off and as i tapped the brakes at 70 mph cause i didn't realize what the clunk was until it was too late. They were happy to replace the pads for free, but didn't care that my $300 rotors were destroyed in the process.

I kind of agree but I had to go with AZ since they were they only parts store close to me who had the part. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts but its supposed to have a "lifetime" warranty.
