Warning For New Truck Buyers

I posted this on another forum that I am on also. I feel that it's important.

I finally talked a co worker of mine into buying a new Dodge. He is a die hard Ford man but just had too many problems with his 04 6.0. He test drove a brand new 06 2500 QC 4x4 auto with 114 miles on the odometer and couldn't believe the power and acceleration, even though he was taking it easy on it because it was new. He bought the truck and the next day a check engine light came on and it was acting much more sluggish. He took it back to the dealer on the same day and after a computer scan the tech asked him what programmer he had on it. He told him none and that he just bought it yesterday and had no plans for any power upgrades for awhile. The tech told him that the truck's ECM had definately been reprogramed and now was in much peril as his warranty also. He of course went ballistic and stormed straight over to the GM's office and demanded an explanation. It was deemed that someone on a test drive on the same day he bought it had the Bully Dog "try before you buy" installed. he demanded his money back and his trade in vehicle but was told it had already been sold . After a heated conversation the dealer gave him the same deal for a identical (except the color) 07 model and a few add on's to boot. I just wonder how many times this has happened, people ******* on these brand new trucks with no miles before the 500 mile easy going period. His new truck had 1.2 miles on it when he drove it home so he is happy plus he hated the woodgrain on the 06 anyway.

Pretty much why I only order new trucks. If they have more than 3 miles on them I reject them. I write it right in the contract. No dealer test drives.

Not many dealers will let you test drive without the salesman riding along. But when I bought mine they did. I was a little shocked when they just handed me the keys and said have fun. But there's always somebody out there ready to take advantage of that trust who screws it up for every other honest person.

the best is when you jump in an ice cold cummins on the lot, take it for a test drive and the first time you turn onto the street the salesmen is in back seat saying " hammer down, you need to feel what these new truck's can do!!"

Idiot salesman

Same thing happened to me on my test drive with an '06. The salesgal said"You can floor it and see how much power it has" My reply was"No thanks". I couldn't do that to the next owner. It was an auto anyway. Ordered an '07 from Dave Smith for less the next day. It was PDI'd by them and arrived with 14 miles. My '99 had a DTT in it and I knew a $4,000 tranny upgrade was necessary. G-56 has been fine so far. Smarty is coming when miles and a few more months go buy.

I seriously doubt this is the norm. You should also consider that someone at the dealer took the truck in for the Bullydog to see what it was like. In the end your buddy got everything he wanted, plus a truck that is a year newer. That is worth at least 2g's down the road when he decides to trade.

My latest truck was right of the dealers lot, but right off the truck as well. 5 miles were on the odometer when I jumped in it the first time and it was built in December. My biggest concern is what is stated above. That some unknowing customer jumped in the truck and "floored it" per the salesperson's request. I put 10 miles on my 07 test drving it. I let it warm up and then took it up to 75mph to make sure there were no vibrations. That was last Friday. It is sitting in the garage right now with 1300 miles on it.

At the time I was looking at buying new the saleman was wanting me to take the truck home for the weekend. He said no big deal try it out over the weekend and see how you like it we do that all the time with customers. I declined to do it myself. Although I did come across a clean trade-in 02 dually truck with 22K on the clock that I did try out over a weekend just knowing they would come off the asking price and take my offer. They would not budge off asking price, I said thanks for the loan and was on my way looking again.

My truck had 1.6 miles on it when I fired it up the first time... Dealer handed us the keys and said "take it for awhile" We drove it about 20 minutes, then I pulled its ears back in the wind and held it there. Took the truck back to the dealership, did the deal and drove it home. IMO, once its up to operating temp, its ready!. Our shop dynos diesel and natural gas engines every day, Fire it up, warm it up, check it for leaks and anything abnormal. Once everything checks out. STAND ON IT... Pull it to full HP and hold it there for a min. of 2 hours. Then pull it down to torque check speed. Unload it, then load it to full HP again. then unload it, cool it down for about 20 minutes and its done.

I'm positive I was the first one to drive my Cummins as I had to remove all those little white styrofoam peanuts from the cab. What a pain that was. Thankfully, the truck was a perfect fit.
