Wandering / squirly after new Nitto TG 285/7/17 E
Put on some new Terra grappler AT's 285/75/17 E today and truck wanders all over like the sidewalls are paper thin. Does not pull but feels like trying to keep a pinball in its lane. Truck feels like it would roll over if ya made a quick maneuver. Lowered pressures to 60 F and 55 R. Recently had new frontend balljoints (moog) and alignment checked twice to verify correct last month and today after new tires put on. I did not have this problem with the old worn BFG AT ko's 285/7/17.
Has anyone else experianced this with these tires or just new tires? Thinking I may take them back if they all react like this. My bud has the toyos in the same size with no prob at all.

Amost all new tires are more squirmy than old ones. The tread is deeper, the rubber is softer, and when you go up a size, that makes a difference too.
The only tires I havn't had that experience with were the 22.5's...go figure.

I think it's the "new" tires. They may take a couple of hundred miles to settle in some. I have the same tire and I love them so far. Perfect size for our trucks, imo. Mileage went up 2-3 mpg over my 35'' BFG MTs.

I just replaced my BFG KOs and put on 315/70/17 Goodyear Wrangler DuraTracs and the truck does the same thing. I keep hearing that it will go away. Hopefully everyone is right because if not I'm not sure what to do. These tires are significantly larger than the BFGs they replaced. I'm going to give it some miles and see what happens.

i had that same problem w/ my nitto dura grapplers that i have on my truck. i first had different tire pressues front and rear but after i put those on and it felt like i was sliding everywhere i upped the tire pressure in the front to match the rear and it pretty much went away. but i didn't think about them being new tires and causing that. i'll have to drop the tire pressure back down to see if that made a difference.

New tires are going to feel different because the edge is still sharp and catches road irregularities. Once the edges wear a bit and the tire breaks in it will be better, some times you notice this after a tire rotation. There are tires, however, that are notorious for squirrelly behavior on the dodge... regardless of alignment. Sorry I don't recall them off hand. One of the guys here at work had to switch from one name brand to another no-name brand and I'll check what brands when he gets back after the holiday.

I just got the same tires and same size about 1500 miles ago...switched from BFG's AT cause they wore way too fast.
My experience was the opposite. The truck wandered horribly with the BFG's and now its WAY better.

I've got BFG's on mine and it drove good and straight until I did the ball joints and now you can't keep it on the road. I'm going to check a few more things before I blame the tires but I have a gut feeling they are the cause.

Wait a minute and think before you make the mistake i did.
you changed one thing ...... the ball joints .......then had a problem and pursued the tires. Tires amplified the problem
if so read here:

I liked my nittos. 285/75R17's in the E rating but the tread life has been horrible i am at 20k miles and they are down to less than 20% tread my bfg's were giving me 35k miles i'll be luck to get 25k- out of these. I dont do burn outs, i dont drive around town alot, i spend most my time on the highway and thee things in the first 10k miles were under 50% tread depth. pretty shocking wear. I do tow a GN but i have for the last 120k miles with this truck.
The squirming is normal on today's new tires some coating or difference int he rubber compound is what i was told. it went away after 1500 miles. I am probably going to put the coin down for some M55's if i have to i'll get 18" wheels i dont want to but thats the only M55's in a size close enough to what i want and i know how well those tires worked for me in the past.

keep your pressures the same for front and rear. on mine, if i have staggered pressures it feels wobbly. equalize pressure (i run 45) and it is fine.

I'm so glad to see this thread. I got TGs a few weeks ago and this wobbly sliding feeling is awful. It started immediately upon putting them on. I'm not confident in the truck's handling anymore. Making lane changes is very wobbly and I am wondering what might happen if I have to do quick, evasive maneuvers.
I'm really hoping it goes away as the tires wear in. I notice they track real bad on the grooved roads. And running a curve on the highway with grooved roads really threw the truck around. Grooved roads haven't ever thrown my motorcycle around that badly.
I was under my truck yesterday and I began to look at my ball joints wondering if they were the problem. But they don't look out of shape. Certainly no tears or broken seals. I didn't yank on them to check for play though.
Anyway, I'll go check the pressures and put all four to the same psi. The guys did 2 and 2 when they installed them and hopefully that reduces the bad handling.
