Vibration in Steering Wheel

About six months ago I noticed a noise that would come and go at first but them became constant. Initially, I thought that is sounded like a bearing going bad in an HVAC blower motor because the sound seemed to come from deep within the dash area or around the firewall area. Now I have a very defininte vibration in the steering wheel that stops as soon as I start moving. If I am at a stop, weather in drive or park, the vibration is very noticable along with the noise and as I stated above; as soon as I start to move the vibration stops and the noise cannot be heard. I assume the noise is still there but it cannot be heard above the normal engine noise.

I took it in to the dealer but they say they cannot find anything wrong. I have two friends with same model year 3500 trucks and engines. One has a six speed and the other has the auto. I can drive either one of these trucks and there is zero vibration or the type of noise I hear before moving away.

The vibration is getting worse and I am thinking about going back to the dealer. Does anyone have any ideas or have experienced the same problems. Any input would be appreciated.

Check you motor mounts for tightness and to make sure one isn't broke. Also, look to see if you have any coolant hoses, brake lines, etc. hitting the firewall or inside fender well and or powersteering hoses hitting the steering column. And, check your alternator and powersteering pump brackets. Ol'e memory says there was a TSB for cracked alternator brackets in 03 and bad power steering hoses causing vibration too!
Good luck!

Mine had a kazoo like buzz at 2000 RPM, and on the third trip to the dealer they put in the updated power steering hose (actually the pressure supply line from the power steering pump to the brake booster).

Solved the problem.

To check to see if you have the updated hose, look to see if there is a metal sleeve in the middle of the run of the upper hose of the two that run to the brake booster. The sleeve would be about adjacent to the power distribution box. There would also be a larger thing on the hose, which looks like some sort of weight.

Rossn2,

Thanks for the reply. I know for a fact that my alternator bracket is cracked. I had seen the TSB about it but never did anything about getting it replaced. I had not heard about the TSB for bad power steering hoses causing vibration.

Can someone please tell me how to check for TSB's. I can't remember where you go to find the list. I would like to return to the dealer with the TSB in hand for these two items and get them taken care of and see if that solves the problem. Is there a time limit for getting a TSB taken care of?

I wonder why the dealer would not have taken care of these two items in the first place if it is a known problem.

Thanks, Hounddog. I figured as much so now I'll look into part prices and install myself. You know, while my truck was in warrenty I had it in and they said there were no TSB's for my truck.

The powersteering hose Tsb has been out since about midyear 03 and the Alt.bracket since early 03.I had the powersteering hose replaced before a TSB.Star shipped it when I had 1000 miles on my truck. You MAY trying calling D.C.and asking for some GOODWILL assistance has both have been known problems for a LONG time.
