valvoline premuim blue oil??
i am a newbie to the diesel world and just purchased a 2003 dodge ram 2500 6 speed with the cummins diesel, and i was wondering, i see of no one using the valvoline premium blue motor oil that cummins puts in the engine when it leaves?? is it no good? also what would u suggest as id like to run synthetic but i do not pull anything such as a trailer. ive known over many years that engines tend to burn sythetic oil more than regular oil and also tend to leak it out any suggestions???

Valvoline Premium Blue is fine oil. You will have excellent results with any CI-4+ API licensed oil.
Synthentic oil does not burn off any faster than organic oil. In fact, most tend to evaporate (NOACK Volatility) less than organics.
Synthentic does NOT create leaks. It does flow much better than organics, so it will "find" a leak. Plus, it keeps your engine cleaner, so sludge can't plug a potential leak. If you have a leak, it is due to a bad seal or gasket, not the oil.

Monkeylips is correct!
Only problem with the Valvoline is finding it without having to go to the Dealer!
Guys and Gals run Rotella, Delo, Delvac, Mobil1, Amsoil, Redline in their trucks. It all depends on pricing, availablity, and personalization.

My local area Schuck's carries the blue for $7.49/gal. I can get Delo for close to $6/gal at Costco (6 1 gal jugs to the case). I'll most likely switch to Delo since it's more widely available.

I run the Valvoline Premium Blue and have since my truck was new, even use to use it in my old Powerjoke before I bought a Cummins. I think it was developed specifically for the Cummins engine and it comes in it from the factory. I know not a lot of people on hear run it for one reason or another but, I prefer it, although with that said I dont prefer every single recommended lubricant by DC (ie manual tranny fluid they recommend nowhere near the Redline) it is all what you are comfortable using for the life blood of your diesel. I buy it at my local NAPA and usually buy a couple cases at a time so I dont always have to take a trip out in order to cahnge the oil. 70,000 miles and still happy

I'm personally a fan of Valvoline oils, but my BIL used to work for Ashland Oil. You can get Premium Blue at Advanced Auto Parts as well. The last 4 gallons I got had a rebate for $5.00 off for 2 gallons. Net cost was $22.00 for 4 gallons. (I know...it only takes 3 gallons to fill
).
I do see Rotella and Delo pretty much everywhere, so definitely easier to get.

Premium Blue is Cummins' formula contracted and brewed by Valvoline. Used to be brewed by Castrol. It's formulated with the Cummins' sliding cam followers in mind as well as the rest of the CPL. I used it as much as I could find it with my four Cummins powered Rams. Discount and Napa usually have it.

I have also found Valvolive PB at Pep Boys.
All I've used in mine for 75,000 miles.
(Except one change with Amsoil, Good oil, just too expen$ive for my tastes)

I am using Premium Blue and have purchased from Cummins shop, NAPA, and Schucks. Price range was a bit over $9 at Cummins, $8.29 at NAPA and $7.49 at Schucks. Get my filters from Geno's Garage in the 4-2-1 Kit. I have only changed my oil twice but like to keep the next change on hand.

Not to discredit the oil, but it should be noted that SEVERAL people running premium blue extreme synthetic have had strangely high potassium numbers in their oil analysis reports. A little disconcerting maybe. The premium blue dino oil supposedly does pretty well, although I haven't looked into it since I run Delvac 1.
