Valve seats falling out

Valve seats falling out
Am I the only one having this problem? First it happened to a customer of mine. He was driving at a high rate of speed and a seat fell out of the #3 exhaust valve. Needless to say catastrophic engine damage. This last week, My '05 was previously running great, I turned the engine on and out of nowhere it is missing ang staying revedup. I thought, well, I guess now is a good a time as any to put my 50hp tips in. I proceed to the nozzle instalation only to find one of my #3 intake valves low. I messed with it a while to try to free it up to no avail. I stuck my bore scope in the port and shure enough, the seat was about 3/16" out of its pocket. Has anybody else had this problem or am I the only one? Is there a cause? Has dodge or cummins had anything to say about this? Both trucks mentioned were only a few thousand miles over 100K.

From what Ive heard the 05's are the most prone for this type of failure. Not too sure if this is true but apparently they have fixed this issue some what in the 06's. If these statements are true, then your not the only 05 out there dropping seats.

Lost the engine in my 04 not 04.5 because of this on #5 cyl. Was running stock power on the highway at 70 mph when I heard a ticking. Backed out of the throttle...too late...lots of noise and smoke...bye bye motor...out of warranty too.

Ouch.
I looked at buying an 06 w/like 50k on it, and an extended warranty.
Got to looking at the service papers he had... Truck came in w/dead miss. They tested injectors, all were in spec but 2 were a little weak, so they replaced them. It indicated no help, pulled head, dropped valve seat.
Then another one said truck woudn't go into Reverse. They tore the transmission down and replaced syncro and a snap ring.
Then there was another one. Knock from bottom of engine. They replaced DMF.
Truck looked taken care of, but I passed on that one...

its hard to buy stuff now a days. you never know what you get. ive had alot of trouble with thid dodge and theres few that dont. im a heavy equipment mechanic and im used to working on the big engines like cummins N14, cat 3406,3208,3176,c-15,3206E,series 60 detroit etc... and after working on my 5.9 cummins and seeing how its built, itll soon be time for me to change to duramax. The stupid engine should have wet or dry liners, be fire ringed from factory, have head studs not bolts, have valve seats made out of metal not wax. Some say on here i dont know what im doing, but you know what i never drove her hard at all. i know i have edge but i only use level 1. and when this last catastrophe happened i was passing someone and i sped up to 120-130 km/hour with chip on 1. i hope this whole affair doesnt cost me more than $15-20,000.00
my warranty covers $2500 only.good news is I think its only valve/cylinder head related as I didnt hear bang or knocks in bottom end. the engine actually was quieter than usual except for the fact that my str8 exhaust amplified the sound and made the noise noticeable

If you are a big iron engine wrench then why don't you pull the head your self? The 5.9 is the easiest head to pull in a pick up truck.
Good luck with the Duramax, and ahh, oh yeah, it is a solid bore engine also.
I can overhaul a 5.9 out of frame for less than $7k, (as long as the block is serviceable), and that includes a Cummins head.

capiche and comprende. Those warranty folks are always looking for a way to get out of the claim. Can you take cash applied at a shop? Who decides where it gets repaired? Do you need estimates? If you can get the 2500 applied to the repair there should be a creative way to get this to work in your favor. wink wink

its going to a wel known diesel shop. they only work on diesels. if the bill comes to $6000 i only pay $3500...if i had bore scope, compression tester, garage with heat or any garage at all, lotsa time and no warranty yes id do it myself.
