Valve Adjustment already?

Hey Guys,
The title pretty much says it all. She has gotten kinda noisy in the past few days. I don't have any diesel experience but I tried to isolate the noise as best i could. Really seems to be a valve train noise. But i have never heard a bad injector or lift pump. It has an irregular pattern to it. I called the dealer and he seemed to think it was the valves. I am going to get it looked at tomorrow.
Any thoughts?
By the way the truck only has 14,000 miles.

check the oil level. if it is overfull you have a bad injector. do you use any form of fuel treatment? when the injectors start to get dirty, they will make some noise. just use a product like stanadyne or power service per the directions with each tank, that will keep them clean.
i assume you are on winter fuel in wisconson. that will make slightly more noise than plain #2. did you just recently fill it up? do you drain the water separator regularly?

lots of questions, but lots of possible causes too.

Hey dodgezilla,
I run PS or howes in every tank. I did just fill up but i drained my water seperator last week and the fuel filter was replaced 2,000 miles ago. My fear is that it is an injector but the noise seems to be louder on the passenger side of the block. Should i request that they do an injector test.?
thanks for the reply,

usually you dont touch the valves on a ctd until 150k miles. however, if you have a competent tech at the dealer, there are no warranty concerns, let them know themselves out doing the valves, just to be certain.

is this noise when cold, fully hot, at an idle, steady crusing speed, WOT, etc?

It does it at idle at all operating temps. It is just like 3 or f4 distinct nocks in a row, then nothing for a irregular amount of time and then it goes again. I have tried running it hard the past coulple of days but the noise remains.

The only thing is the quad standard box, and i took that off because they are sending me an new control pod. the noise was the same with the quad box in the off position. Everything else is stock except for the air filter.

the quad is never really 'off' unless removed. you sent the module, i assume you used the bypass plug to continue driving until the module is back.

try completely disconnecting the harness and going back to stock, just to ensure the harness isnt loose or anything.

you say the sound is on the pass side. injectors are in the middle of the head. have you developed an exhaust leak either at the gasket or did the manifold crack(they are prone to do so).

I took the quad harness off this morning in prep for vist to dealer. I guess i did not check for a manifold crack or leak, i assumed that with only 14,000 miles there would not be to much fatique yet. i guess i will just have to wait and see. the appt is tomorrow afternoon.

ok. the manifold can crack whenever, it is a long piece of cast iron, with no expansion joints, get it hot enough for long enough, and she can easily crack. all the aftermarket units have slip joints for expansion. let the dealer worry. good luck.

I dought that its your valves. On the other hand I ran the valves on my 04 at 40k and there were several that were out of adjustment by a fair amount. My truck suffers from the injector rattle also if I travel the interstate unloaded alot.

I’m not sure if this will help you or not but I felt my valves were in need of adjustment before I went on vacation this last week. After it sat for 8 days it is as quite as the day I bought. I have 12,000 miles on mine and the only thing I have done different is I used a higher grade of fuel and added 9 oz of Lucas in my tank at my last fill up. I drove this thing 65 miles with the new fuel and Lucas before it sat so that is the only thing I can think that helped mine quite down. Oh before I had used a small amount of MMO and PSD every few tanks of fuel.

Good Luck.
