Universal Joints

Had a Universal Joint going bad on my "03" last week @ 49,500 Miles.

Launch Shudder.
Vibration above 30MPH.
Bad Shudder coming to a stop.

Took it to the Dealer, they checked it out and said:

OK .. we have to replace the Universal Joints, The 2 piece DriveShaft,
and the Front Axels !

Seemed a little extreme to me but after visual inspection thats what they replaced, anyone else have experience with this.

Anyhow its smooth now so I am happy.

I can't imagine you would have to replace anything in the front yet, possible, but I doubt it. All three joints have been replaced in the rear of mine, and she now rides smooth as silk. All front joints on mine still seem perfect with over 100k on them.

Scott at Massdiesel replaced my rear U-joint last weekend. Smooth as silk now at 39000 miles.

Foxy, If it was covered under your 7/70k mile warranty consider yourself very, very lucky. The front driveshaft is cheaper than buying the ujoints for the axle The Chrysler ujoints are just ok and wayyyyy overpriced. You can get great aftermarkets for $35. ks.

Yes it was covered under the 7/70 Warranty with the $ 100.00 Deductible, otherwise I would have gotten the aftermarket universal joints with the grease zerks on them.

DC will only give you OEM parts as replacements but I figured as long as it's on their $$$ and they are willing to do it go ahead and do it.

I dropped my truck off at the dealer yesterday because I had a vibration and they thought it was the u joints. Well They still have my truck because they had to order a new rear driveshaft. I asked if I could drive it until the parts came in and I was told that it could cause some other problem and I would start to loose tranny fluid. I don't know what they meant but what ever. does anyone know why the driveshaft would need to be replaced???? Thanks

There does seem to be a lot of bad drive shafts out since 2003 I have an 04 non 600 I don't know who makes the drive shafts but they should go back to who ever made them before 2003 I had 180,000 on my old 2000 dodge pulled the same loads as I do now and never touched that truck. Ive been to the dealer so much for powertrain problums I hate to go back (1 clutch 1 transfercase 1 6speed manual 2 sets of ujoints at 55000 miles But still better then a ferd

I just got the rear half of the rear drive shaft replaced at 31,000 miles. I had a shudder/vibration and had taken it in at about 24,000 and the response was that the angle of the driveline was set up for a certain amount of weight and this was normal. After towing my 5th wheel for almost 7,000 miles from Dec to Feb the vibration was worse. I looked at the driveline and a rubber seal was missing from one of the U-joints. Took it back to the dealer and the service manager said they would probably be replacing the section of drive shaft as that is what was causing the u-joints to go bad.

Don't know if it was true but I have a new rear half of drive shaft and it is smooth again. It was easy to tell it was new as I had spent a lot of that 7,000 miles towing in salt and the other 24,000 has been mostly in rain.
