Under hood fast ticking with key on, not running
Hello everyone,
I changed my fuel filter the other day and noticed with my key on - not running I have a fast ticking coming from under the hood.
Any thoughts on what it is?
I do not think it is the vacuum pump
Thanks ahead if time
Scott

If it's the ticking I'm thinking of it's perfectly normal. Mine does the same thing....I don't know what it is but it's done it from day one.

The CTD's do not have glow plugs... they have grid heaters. The clicking from the grid heater relays would not be fast.
The very faint clicking is the injectors and it's completely normal. I believe it is intended to relieve air and does so no matter if air is present or not.
The fuel pump will run for two seconds when you turn the key to run. If you bump the starter the fuel pump will run for about 25 seconds.

It's not the injectors or grid heater. It is the Vaccum pump on the passenger side behind the passenger side battery. If you are hearing it alot, trace the black poly cable and look for spots that are rubbed through. It will run to a the cruise dashpot and T off to a square vaccum canister that is under the cowl panel.
The 03' thru 04.5 trucks are the only CR's that have them. In 05' they went to drive by wire.
It could also be the factory LP if yours is still on your fuel filter at the back. That would make sense because you just changed your fuel filter. I kinda doubt it though. The 04.5 LP's normally didn't last too long.

Well all common rails have that "ticking" sound with the key on but the engine off. It's completely normal.
It's not the 2003-2004.5 fuel filter cannister mounted lift pump because the ticking is still there if you have an in-tank pump or an aftermarket lift pump.
It's not the vaccum pump because that was the 2003-2004 automatic trans trucks. My 6 speed manual 2004.5 absolutely does NOT have a vacuum pump but it still ticks.
My understanding is that the ticking is the injectors purging themselves into the return gallery in the head.
They are NOT injecting fuel into the cylinder.

thanks everyone - I am out of town for work and will feel the vacuum pump when I get back. From memory it does make noise when you have a leak (been there done that - clue is cruise doesn't work) but not the same fast clicking noise that I heard.

Turn key on,do not start engine, open hood, place finger on number one injector line closest to the front of engine, you have found and will feel the ticking.

It has the APPS mounted under the drivers side battery and the cruise works fine!
I thought that since the coolant overflow bottle was relocated to the passenger side firewall in 2004.5 (where the vacuum pump is located on the 2003-04 trucks),
plus the upgraded ECM, that the 2004.5+ trucks did not have a vacuum pump.
Your 2004.5 is an automatic trans which may explain the difference. Where is your APPS located and where is the vacuum pump located?

Interesting.... I did not think any 2004.5+ trucks had a vacuum pump. I do know that the Apps could be in either location for the 2004.5's.
I'm surprised that the vacuum pump fits between the passenger side battery and the overflow tank.

I know, I was just making fun of myself. I am a newbie to diesels and the more I read the more mistakes I make (so it seems), thanks for the info. Sorry if I came off like a jerk, I find it easier to make fun of myself rather than get in a msg war. I am glad we don't have plugs, I did help replace some on a 6.5 Ford and it was a pain. Have a good one and expect more mistakes from this guy.
