U-joint repair has just turned VERY nasty

Sounds like he had a cruddy mechanic or supervisor. It's frustrating but he stood up for his company and work quality.

I bet if you send a tip to him covering the extra amount of the parts cost he'd never forget you.

The Snap-On tool is probably the best way to go, considering the price. I did my first Unit bearing / U-joint / ball joint replacement on my 95 4x4 a few weeks ago. I was reluctant to use the power steering to push out the bearing, but I found that it was the best way to remove it. It initially sounded like a shady junkyard mechanic way to press out a bearing. I then realized, after almost using a slide hammer, that the power steering method applies all the load to the heavy bearing housing, and does not apply force to the actual rollers inside. If you use a slide hammer, you are basically hammering the rollers inside the bearing, and run the risks of damaging the bearing. I was able to piece together an extension, along with a socket, to fit between the bearing bolts and the axle. It worked perfectly.
