TSB on gear clatter when 6spd trans. cold

Recall (?) that when cold, the 6 spd will sound like a jackhammer with the engine at idle and clutch released, but the noise goes away when under load or until the tranny warms up. Not a throw out bearing....There were a couple of threads around on this during the winter months, and the conclusion that it was normal...more or less.

I was at the dealer getting the alternator bracket parts ordered when the service manager came up to me and indicated that there was a TSB #06-001-03 issued 16 May/03 for the NV5600 6spd built before 11 May/03 called "rattle from transmission when idling". The TSB indicated a clutch disk replacement (P/N 52107775AC) as a cure....apparently the new disk has better dampening properties (?).

Anyone out there have more info on this?

They replaced the clutch disk on mine and it cured the rattle at idle. But the transmission still has a rattle when your ideling down a road in 1 or 2 no bad but you here it.I guess you notice it because the engine is so quite.Till or if they get a TSB on that they say its normal. This dealer has already replaced several clutch disks and its been talked about quite a bit over on the TDR.

Re:TSB on gear clatter when 6spd trans. cold

Went to the dealer today and they have a clutch disk on the way. I was scared that I was going to have to get into a fight for them to do the TSB, no problems, they are even going to do the alternator bracket TSB and the whole passenger side mirror because the glass vibrates. This is my first truck with a warranty so I hope the rest of my visits are as good as this one.

I had this and the dealer said it was a bearing in the trans and a fix was on the way. The at around 6000miles it magically went away.

I'm going to keep the TSB # cited here and if the clatter comes back I can then go in. No point in having them change the clutch plate if nothing is wrong.

Re:TSB on gear clatter when 6spd trans. cold

Guess what, my truck has a build date of 06-11-03. With 2400 miles on her now I have developed the cold disc rattle. As soon as the truck is warmed up , it is gone. Funny thing is according to the TSB trucks built after 05-11-03 are supposed to have updated disc's! Anyway my old 2500 (gasser) always had that rattle Hot or Cold. I sold it with over 80k on the org. disc, never had a lick of trouble.

I had the rattle and the dealer said a fix was in the works. Then, after about 4K miles the rattle went away. I now have nearly 10,000 miles and it has yet to show itself again.

But it is good to have the TSB just in case.

Question...for all of you guys that just go in and the dealerships orders the parts, how do you do this?? I'd love to just go into the dealership, show them the TSB for the alternator bracket and the clutch disc and just have them order the parts, but I think they'd just laugh at me. If they don't HAVE to fix it (it's not a recall), why would they? How do you convince them to go ahead and do it??

Re:TSB on gear clatter when 6spd trans. cold

Mine has the neutral clatter hot or cold. It is worse when it is cold. The only time it really bothers me is when I do the drive thru windows. The TSB for that is called stay away from the fast food joints. ;D In the mean time I am going to do nothing about the clatter. I am not that interested in taking the chance that it could be worse after having the clutch disc replaced or they might screw the truck up. I have had nothing but bad luck when in for any previous service.

Re:TSB on gear clatter when 6spd trans. cold

Had mine done today. Clatter gone ;D. I got to take a look at the old clutch disc and the springs were pretty loose in their "slots". They even turned the flywhell for me, haven't noticed if DC has done this for others. I can't imagine putting in a new disc and not turning the flywheel anyway!
Hoss I took them the TSB #'s and they said no problem and went out to listen to the clatter and ordered the parts right then. Same for the alt. bracket, just looked at it and ordered the new one at the same time, it was cracked though. They were actually ragging on Dodge for putting such a cheap part on a HD truck. I think it really depends on your dealer.
I got a pleasant surprise also, asked the service rep if I installed gauges if this would hurt my warranty, he said no and if I install a box/chip to just make sure he never sees it 8)

Re:TSB on gear clatter when 6spd trans. cold

the noise is just that, a noise. there are no performance issues with this disc. i too am not going to have a tear down on a brand new truck for loose springs on the disc. my old one rattled for 80k miles and never had a problem!

Re:TSB on gear clatter when 6spd trans. cold

No there are no performance issues but it's annoying as heck! A new truck shouldn't make noises, let Dodge foot the bill and fix it. I don't like anyone else working on my trucks just like most people on here but it's fixed and working good ;D

New clutch plate yesterday - - trying to correct the shudder when towing in 1st gear. It did nothing to correct the chatter at low rpms in low gears. Bummer.
