Truck wont start

Truck wont start
I pulled my truck out of my shop to work on my dads van & when I went to put it back it wouldn't start. The only code it is showing is p0477 which is Exhaust pressure Control Relay low. I Changed oil & filters two weeks ago & has been running fine. Truck only has 35K original miles on it, just been using it for a daily driver this last year. I know the fuel is good I have a full tank & get my fuel at our bulk plant that I retired from. Checked the fuel pump fuse under the hood Pulled the cap off the fuel filter canister & it was full. Any ideas?

Well, don't know what to tell you. I've never seen that code before, therefore I'm no help. When you say it won't start, does it turn over? Does it try to fire at all? Not trying to be rude or anything, but sometimes a little more info helps. You could always post your question in the help section, you may get an answer faster that way.

Even with 9 yr. old batteries it cranked but wouldn't turn over. My brother shot a little starting fluid in the air cleaner after the grid heater stopped cycling & it tried to fire but didn't run. We figured it was a fuel problem so I cracked the banjo bolt to the pump & got fuel & could hear the pump back in the tank running. Maybe she lost her prime but I wasn't wanting to crack an injection line with the high pressure it puts out so to the dealer it went. I also put two new batteries in it this morning.

Hmm, never seen that code before. Weird. You would need a way to check the rail pressure. It is possible your rail relief valve opened up causing you not to build enough rail pressure to start. You need around 5-6000psi to start.

Dealer called & said fuel leaking back from pressure relief valve, so that's what they are replacing. I seen an old post on another forum back in 2009 had the same problem. What gets me is I only have 35,000 miles on the truck since new in 05.

Btw, don't crack an injector line on a common rail. They self purge air, and run at pressure high enough to inject through skin, which could cost you an amputation.
Anyway, if it isn't developing rail pressure needed to start, there is a relief valve, or the possibility of one or more injectors with excessive return flow.

Got my truck back & I will never take it to a dealer again. Oh it runs great but they soaked me for the part. I'm all for supporting local businesses' but not when they gouge you. The cost was $935.70 that was 2 hours labor which I have no problem with diagnose & R&R but the fuel rail relief valve was $735.69 that's $459.64 higher than the highest price from Cummins & I found it for $220.00 on E-bay. Had I done my homework & new what the problem was I could have changed out that part in 30 minutes. Live & learn.
Ok rant off I feel somewhat better now.

I agree with you, part prices at dealership are out of sight. 100% markup on already expensive parts is just crazy. Maybe next time give DTR a chance to help you diag your problem, we're here to try and help and could save you some money.
