My old 07 5.9 6 speed got 15 city/16-18 hwy/10-11 towing. Best ever was 22mpg at 60 mph on the highway. That truck was broken in at 32000 miles on it.
My 08 w/ 6 speed auto gets 13.5 city/16-18 hwy/8-9 towing. Best ever is 20 mpg at 65 mph on the highway. This truck only has 4000 miles on it and I'm hoping for improvement. The 07 got similar numbers when it was new.
Now, the 03 I had got much better numbers. I would search for a low mileage one of those if I was going to tow a lot. Mine got 16 city/20-22 hwy/13-14 towing. Best ever was 24 mpg on the hwy at 60 mph. That was with the truck set up at around 400hp for daily driving.
I still like the 08 so much better because it has all the great new features and it makes so much more stock power. There are ways to get better mileage but they are expensive and illegal. They are very tempting though at $5.00 per gallon for fuel.......

Recently I bought a loaded 06 laramie dually because I was afraid of the bad MPG numbers I was seeing posted about the 6.7 (like bigvick's).
Now, though, it seems like people are talking about getting 1-2 MPG less than my truck gets (like dogezilla posted), so I'm wondering if the later 6.7's do better?
(Is it just me, or do people who post decent MPG's with the 6.7 often have an 08, where people who post really bad MPG's seem to have an 07 6.7?)
Anyway, if I were in your shoes and wanted a manual, I think I'd make an offer on the 5.9 or find another one. If you want an auto, though, I think I'd find an 08 to get the 68RFE 6 speed. The toggle shift buttons work well with the built in exhaust feature of the variable turbo, and although the 48RE seems to be reliable with stock power I think having only 4 speeds limits towing performance.
32k would seem like quite a bit for the 07 5.9 unless it was a laramie H w/nav and sun roof or something, but on the other hand with only 8k on the clock it is pretty much new...

With the truck and SUV market where it is today it sounds a little high for the 07. But as you state many are trying to find them so maybe the dealer has a large group looking at it. I paid 34K for my 07 brand new so he is almost there unless its fully loaded or something. Mine is a 07 5.9 4X4 Big Horn cloth interior, with tow package, snow plow pkg, auto tranny, manual transfer case, and a few other options. Not knocking your offer but I'm thinking around $30K would be a better deal.....Just my $.02 worth though and I do know they are hard to find......
ps around Christmas made a hurried trip without the 5th wheel from Tampa Fl to Lansing Mi area and got an actual 21.7 MPG average round trip. Towing it's usually around 11 or so. Towing a !12K fiver, high profile and usually run 65-75 mph range.

I haven't started negotiating on the price. That is the list asking price. Speaking to the sales person I told him I'm only starting to look so I will be shopping around, blah blah blah, but at 30K I would buy the truck. They are bringing it over for me to look at today, I agree about the 30K price. However, it is one of the lower priced ones within 100 miles of my home on autotrader.

Talk to the previous owner of the truck to see if they were any problums with it. Not many people will trade off a good truck with 7000 miles. If the dealer service Dept. types in the vin # I would think you should find if it has had any service work done.

5.9 gets my vote. better mileage than the 6.7! the fuel special dodge is running will eventually end. so any savings you saved buying the fuel for 2.99 for the 6.7 will be negated when the special ends and the 6.7 is drinking more fuel than the 5.9 would over the course of the next couple of years.

5.9...way to go...
I was just at the dealer Tuesday and I was told ,by my Business Link Agent , that Dodge is still having A LOT of problems with the Particulate Filter.and to hold off on buying a NEW 6.7
The problem comes from the trucks NOT getting enough HARD WORK DAILY to
BURN/Clean out the filter

I also vote for the 5.9L Cummins. You can't beat the reliability, power, and mileage you get out of these motors. I know that at 88k, my 04.5 is still breaking in and getting better mileage everyday. I think you could get that '07 for less than $32k. Guy on another board just bought a dealer demo '08 with 8k for $30,500. Good luck in your search!

I drive an 08 for work and an 03 is my personal rig. I really like the 08, but like everyone else said, it doesnt get the greatest mileage. 20mpg is the best I've been able to get. The 03 will get that all day long without even trying to take it easy.

I put a deposit on the 2007, lot of guys posting up pretty low prices for various trucks but I went to three dealerships today and the best I found on a new SLT with 4x4, quad cab, hitch, auto and a few other options was 42K with fuel special. One thing about the fuel special, right now if you buy an 08 you either get 4500 back plus 1500 owner loyalty. If you get the fuel you get 2K back. So either 2500 now or some undisclosed savings should diesel stay as high as it is. I am paying 30k for the truck and it was by far the least expensive one I could find in the NYC area.
Thanks for all the help, oh and I bought a gps tracking device to put into the vehicle, one time purchase and then the serice is free.
