Truck sits, starts rough, rattley ticking noise...
Whenever my truck sits for more than 24 hours is starts and runs rough for several seconds, but is fine when its only been sitting overnight. The longer it sits the worse it is. Also, the longer I have had the truck the more I hear a ticking/clattery/rattle noise that's kind of *below* the exhaust/engine noise. Don't hear it with radio on to speak of but it is definitely there. It is a really hard noise to describe, but I guess the best way is to say it sounds a little like a baby rattle and you only hear it under accel. With the long thread about the injector problems, it makes me wonder if maybe I have one or more injectors on their way out. I guess I also would have a hard itme distinguishing between normal diesel engine noise at idle and a slight knock. Anyone have any thoughts?

Yep! sounds like and injector. Take it to the dealer and have them keep it for 2 or 3 days and then start it on the 2nd or 3rd day and it should repeat what you are saying it is doing.

Hay guys I need your help also on this subject. I'm also having this ticking or sounds more like a 4 cylinder gas engine missing when you accelerate. I have 4.5 3500-4x4 manual and about 8500 miles on it. The first 5000 miles I did not hear or experience any of these issues that I'm hearing now. I live in the northwest area.
When I first start the engine after it sat all night with about 23 to 32 degrees temp, it hesitates and shakes for about 10 sec. and then it idols ok. I warm it up accordingly and drive it to work. While the engine is still warming up as it's being driven, I do not hear the ticking sound, but after it starts warming up under acceleration it makes that noise that sounds like pinging.
I have taken it twice to a dodge dealership and they have not been much help. First time they re-flashed the ECM. Second time when I complained about the problem, one of their mechanics went with me on a test drive and heard the noise. He did not know what it could be. After discussing it with the service manager, they decided to check the valves but they did not fined any problem and told me that it was a normal sound I'm hearing since this new engine is much quieter then it's predecessors. I think it's bull and I think there is a problem. I would appreciate any input from you guys.
Thanks,

Well I dont know if I want to give the dealer 3 days to wait and start my truck....man what a crock...I dont have another vehicle to use while it is laid up, will the dealer give me one? I am pretty positive it is a leaking injector but I don't know what the rattley noise is...

I had the new TSB performed weeks ago and still get the rough idle and smoke at start up, also I have the same ticking noise that you do....almost sounds like a stuck lifter, is this what you guys are experiencing? Mines going back to Dealer again....hope they fix it this time, it's getting old real quick.

Mine does that also, but I personally don't think it's a problem. Its well known that diesels don't like cold weather, and even though they have improved this in the 600 supposedly, I doubt they will ever just start up and run like a gasser. Mine does exactly what you guys are describing UNLESS I plug it in and then it runs smooth at start up. When I worked at FedEx, all the trucks had the Cummins, if we left them out all night when it was really cold they would smoke like crazy and ran VERY rough for minutes. I'm no expert, but if it's not doing it at any other time besides a cold start then I wouldn't worry.

I was told that they will run real rough for a while after starting in cold weather. The Tech said that they retard the timing some times on cold sterst but not always. He did not give any reason why it was not always but he said if the conditions are corect it will retard the timing as far as it will go and that is the reason for the rough idle and all the smoke. He said theres nothing that can be done. Now as for the ticking noise, get used to it. It only gets worse. My 600 started real faint. When I had around 4000 miles on it is when I first started hearing it. At that point I could only hear it if I had the window down and it was echoing off something. Now I have almost 13000 miles on it and it is stupid loud. I almost wish I had my old 2nd gen truck back so that I could claim it sounds like a diesel because it would. Now it just sounds like crap. It sounds as if its on its last leg. I used to describe the sound as injector tick now its more of a full blown knock. What realy gets me is that Star ties the hands of otherwise perfectly good Techs and wont let them fix problems that they find. I balive this is my last DC product mainly for that reason.

Well its not cold in Houston. Mine was smooth as glass starting, idling and no tick/knock etc for the first 7500 miles. Since then very rough idle, hard to start, misfires and sputters for first 5 minutes after cold start. Enough white smoke to fog the neighborhood until warmed up. Low end knock noticable at low rpm.
Going to the dealer Wednesday to see what they say. They can keep it overnight, that is all they will need to experience and see the problem.
I guess I'll be driving the old '73 Chevy Blazer for a couple of days. It is completely original engine with 200,000 plus miles. Starts easier, smokes less and idles smoother than my new Cummins and that is very frustrating.

Sounds like bad injectors.
Here is a simple way to check. You will need a Crayola Crayon, yellow is best, and a cold engine. Open your hood, start the engine, take your crayon and start marking the exhaust manifold tubes closest to the head. The crayon should start melting as the engine warms up. If there is a bad injector, the crayon will melt REAL slow. You will know if you have a bad injector.
Hope this helps.

I think some of you guys are paranoid - and are just hearing normal diesel noises. The pilot injection is a smaller injection event which is what I think you guys are hearing. You will hear a knock-knock in the background of the main engine/exhaust noise at all times if you have good hearing. This is normal. As others have posted - if you have a bad injector, YOU WILL KNOW IT. You won't wonder - the truck will run like total crap, have bad mpg, and smoke. Someone who has white smoke that can fog an intersection has a problem - someone with a ticking noise doesn't IMO. It's not a gasser, it's not going to be a smooth, harmonious noise. Mine has gotten louder and tickier since new. MPG has also gone up.
