Question Truck Shopping

Hey Fellas!

Me and my Pap are goin truck shopin and wer'e gunna check out some cummins at our local dealership. He's finnaly trading in that beat old Ford gaser. I just wanted to ask how you can tell the difference from the 555, the 600, and the 610. By either the Vin, or the engine info plate, etc. I dont know where the info plate is on the newer trucks. As you can tell I've just got Dozen Valvers.

And What are the advantages of the different motors? I know obviously the 610 has more TQ than the 555, but what reliablilty issues have there been etc...

The truck is gunna have to plow, tow a bit, and be able to pull some serious weight. We have to move our small machinery and it can get heavy. So What tranny should he get?

Thanks a whole bunch guys!!

Re: Truck Shopping

The window sticker should tell you everything you want to know. Also on the drivers side of the valve cover should tell you the build date and the HP (305 will be a 555 and 325 will be a 600 for a 04.5 or 610 if it is a 05). I have had both engines (555 / 610) and I really can’t tell any difference in the power. Both of mine tow almost exactly the same. I had the 6sp in the 555 but I have the auto 48RE in the 610. I like both but it sure is nice not having to shift. I think the 6sp will be more reliable though.

Hope this helps some

Britt

no problem.

the only other thing that i can think of is you might consider getting a dually. i love mine. it is bigger but it is nice being able to carry the extra weight and having the 2 extra tires.

Yea, we were thinkin bout the Dualie...But we need all season traction. Aren there any dually tires with an agressive tread? all I've ever found and used are wussy tread tires for dualies. and quite frankly both me and my Pap need agressive tires...all our job sites are off road, and we need winter usage fron them. Thanks alot!

now that's what i've been trying to find out myself. i know RatherBeMuddin has some GoodYear MTR's on his truck but he had to use spacers for the rear duals. i had some MTR's on a 2500 and i loved them. they were a great all around tire and looked great. here is his member page... Click Here

yeah, thats the same problem i'm running into. unless you buy a spacer for the rear duals your pretty much stuck with the stock tires.

You will get better traction with the SWR axle when unloaded or moderately loaded. Aren't most off road trails kinda narrow?
