I have always used a paint filter in my funnel just in case there is any remnants of the aluminum seal stuff or any other debris in the new jug of oil.

I have watched many mechanics pre-fill oil filters when installing them in both gas and diesel vehicles, over a good 50 years of that voyerism. Seems to me it is a good practice so nothing runs dry for a few seconds, and also there is some consideration for getting air in the system which take a while to purge out according to some other stuff I have read.

Who knows what's right or wrong, but the filter in the funnel easily solves the issue.
