transmission shift points

Anyone else feel like the transmission shift points are too high?

I have a 2500 with the cummins 600. When driving (especially unloaded) the truck surges forward after it shifts into the next higher gear. It is like they didn't change the transmission to take advantage of the power gains in the 600 engine.

Anyone know of a way to change this? Is it as simple as buying a controler or is there more to it?
