Transmission juming around trying to find a gear

Any ideas why transmission is constantly jumping around. If I am going 20 MPH it will just go from one gear to another back and forth until I speed up or slow down and it doesn't just do it at 20MPH but other speeds as well. I have the smarty beta version with a 6" lift on 37's 5.9L 4X4 Mega Cab. I haven't noticed it with other programs, so maybe it is just the beta version that is causing this problem?

It is the bigger tires. mine does the same thing. Your final drive ratio (gear ratio) is lower with the large tires which changes your rpm's

Yeah, but my 06 never did it with the same setup and my 07 didn't do it with the Superchips programmer in it either???? Maybe the Smarty isn't good with the transmission.

There is a TSB out for the '06.
See my post "Xillarader is Visible" in the Accessories and performance section.

don't think it is to much on the lift mine does the same and I have stock tires on it still. The only way I can get away from it is put it in tow/haul mode when I drive under 40 around town and regular mode on the highway.

Mostly its the computer trying to adjust for the driving conditions and not being sensitive enough to handle the fine control. The 48RE computer controls are a hack and like any other hack just don't work right all the time.

Larger tires just confuse it even more as the program is working in very narrow paramters and has almost no flexibility.

The governor sensor and solenoid are also frequently the culprits, as is the TV electronic control. There is a TSB for the shuttle shifting that some have had success with but not sure if it is limited to certain models. Others have had success with DTT's Shift Enhanser, VB mods, etc, to get rid of it.

Some times it is easy to fix, other times not so. Every truck differs as does driving style which is a huge contributor.

Do you have a code, P1757 I think? I had one on my truck, changed the governor solenoid, and shuttle shifting is gone.

There is some more posts here under (1 / 2 studder). It's actually something in the transmission which may be under warranty. Have a look at the other posts.

Mine was doing the same thing, even though I set the pinion factor for my larger tires....turned out to be the bands out of adjustment.. Look into that and adjust them, its dead easy to do.

Mine started constantly hunting for a gear. It was a pressure transducer plug that was damaged during assembly. A new plug, a new transducer and a new governor fixed it. This was with stock tires.

Has nothing to do with tires. I've got over 100,000 miles on oversize tires and no problems. I ran 315s for 50,000 miles and 285 for about 55,000 miles with no problems.

Solenoid and pressure sensor are both in the VB.

I just changed out the solenoid and sensor for new ones and replaced the pressure relief valve and manual valve with Sonnax pieces. Much better shifts and no more hunting for gears at lower rpms with the Smarty turned up.

First of all let me say "HI". I'm new to DTR web site and looking forward to some interesting reading and hoping to learn a thing or two.

zmock8,
Don't know for sure if it will work for your truck or not, but my '99ram 3500 was doing the same thing. I did a TPS reset and that cured my problem.
